2017 M. NCAA Up/Downs: Texas Puts 6 Up to Extend Lead on Day 3

2017 MEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, while places 9 through 16 make the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session at the Men’s NCAA Championships. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final and “Down” refers to swimmers in the B final.

After day 3 prelims, the Longhorns are projected to extend their lead to over 100 points. Texas put 6 men into championship finals tonight and 3 men into consolation finals. Cal had the next highest total, putting 4 men into championship finals and 2 into consols. With that, they should be able to hold a lead over Florida for the runner-up spot.

The race for 5th between Indiana, Stanford, and Georgia should be extremely close. Of the 3 teams, Georgia has the most “ups” and scoring swims, but they have a little bit of ground to make up as they were in 8th after day 2.

Below, you can see each team’s individual updown count, their relay updowns, and their projected scores for tonight based on their prelims performances.
