2016 Winter Jr Championships (East): Kibler Drops 42.9 100 Free in Day 4 Prelims

2016 U.S. WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS- EAST

The final prelims session of the 2016 U.S. Winter Junior Championships (East) saw Carmel Swim Club’s Drew Kibler break 43 for the first time in the 100 free. Kibler led the field with a 42.99, making him the 2nd fastest 15-16 swimmer of all time in the event. Tonight, he’ll be going after Ryan Hoffer‘s 15-16 NAG Record of 42.67. He’ll have another showdown with SwimMAC’s John Walker, who qualified 2nd for the final in 43.96.

Quest Swimming’s Clark Beach knocked a couple seconds off his 200 back time to take top seed in 1:43.36 ahead of Destin Lasco (1:44.63). This morning also saw prelims of the 200 breast, in which Reece Whitley (1:55.23) took the top seed with ease.

On the women’s side, Gator Swim Club’s Isabel Ivey (48.60) set up another battle with Morgan Tankersley (49.01) in the 100 free, as the 2 swimmers took the top 2 seeds for the final. Nashville Aquatic Club’s Alex Walsh qualified for the B-final in that event, but that came shortly after she took top seed in the 200 back. She swam to a 1:55.13 in that race  ahead of Madison Homovich (1:56.12).

Ivey and Kibler continue to dominate. John Walker still having the meet of his life (seriously, how do you drop from 1:40 to 1:33 in one meet?) Does anyone know how long he’s been swimming?
Whitley seems to have taken a little of his focus off the breaststroke events for the IMs, which I think will help his longevity, but I’d love to see 1:52-1:53.0 from him.

According to USA swimming, Walker has times from when he was 9. So he’s been swimming since then or before.

His pre-meet PBs
50 free. 20.75
100 free. 46.14
200 free. 1.40.02

Post-meet PBs
50 free. 20.10
100 free. 43.96 for the moment, still a final to swim
200 free. 1.33.73

Looks like he has started to improve a lot since last spring. Correct me if I’m wrong but it looks like he trains at SwimMAC only since that time according to the USA swimming database. And last summer he swam a very decent 51.58 in the 100 free in long course.

John “Jack” Walker has been swimming competitively for the past 3-4 years. He won the NC LC 50 and 100 free this past August. Definitely the meet of his life so far.
