Women’s 400 Meter Freestyle – Final

Sandpipers of Nevada’s Erica Sullivan, who came in with the top seed time, got a wire-to-wire win in the championship final of the women’s 400 free. Sullivan jumped out to an early lead, and while outsplit over the back half, she was able to hang on for a 4:10.87 win. Sullivan moves from #34 to #20 on the all-time list for 15-16 girls.
Taylor Ault of La Mirada Armada, who came from behind to win the 800 free on Day 1, had a strong back half but it was too little too late, and she was unable to catch Sullivan. Ault took .90 off her seed time, though, with her second-place 4:11.57, and moved to #46 on the all-time list for 17/18 girls.
Greater Tampa’s Morgan Tankersley finished third in 4:13.20, a nearly three-second improvement off her seed time, and the #77 performance of all time for 17/18 girls.

Fynn Minuth, representing Pittsburgh Elite and University of South Carolina, blazed through the 400 in 3:53.61 to claim the Junior National title. 16-year-olds Drew Kibler of Carmel Swim Club and Johannes Calloni of Scarlet Aquatics battled for second. Kibler came home in a lightning-quick 27.7 to pass Calloni over the last 50 meters and earn the silver medal. Kibler’s 3:55.49 and Calloni’s 3:55.60 put them at #25 and #25, respectively, on the all-time list for 15-16 boys.

The women’s 100 fly final could hardly have been more exciting if it had been scripted. After a stunning morning performance from Fort Collins Area Swim Team’s Coleen Gillilan that saw her break 1:00 for the first time, there was anticipation in the air. Brea Aquatics’ Alexis Margett got out front early, turning in 28.0 at the 50 wall, a half-body length ahead of the field. But Gillilan and Riptide Swim Team’s Regan Smith soon pulled even with Margett who was unable to maintain her pace over the second half. Almost out of nowhere, Austin Swim Club’s Dakota Luther charged forward over the last 25 meters and snatched victory from Gillilan and Smith, breaking 1:00 and winning with 59.86. Gillilan went 1:00.01 for second, while Smith finished with 1:00.46. Margett faded to fourth.

Meet record-holder and national age group record-holder Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club was barely challenged en route to winning the 100 fly final. He was out with a body length lead over the field at the halfway mark already, and though not the fastest coming home, he had built enough of a lead to win comfortably. Andrew touched in 53.18. North Carolina Aquatic Club’s Will Macmillan had tried to go out with Andrew but he suffered on the back half as both Cody Bybee of Dayton Raiders and Camden Murphy of Kingfish Aquatic Club passed him for second and third, respectively. Bybee finished with 54.07; Murphy, 54.14.

Men’s 4×200 Meter Free Relay
Dayton Raiders won the men’s 800 free relay title with a strong swim from Tommy Cope (1:52.27), Eric Knowles (1:52.24), Evan Stapp (1:58.54), and Cody Bybee (1:51.02). Cope went a best time to put the Raiders in the lead from the first leg over Austin Swim Club and Carmel Swim Club. Carmel took over the lead after the third leg, but Dayton Raiders’ Bybee came home in a 1:51.0 to shut down the competition.
Austin Swim Club (Matthew Willenbring, Grant Thompson, Jack Dunworth, and Josh Artmann) placed second in 7:35.18. Third place went to Carmel’s Wyatt Davis, Drew Kibler, Troy Li, and Brett Sherman with 7:36.05.
