Women’s 500-yard Freestyle – Final
- NCAA DII: 4:43.37 3/13/2015 Patricia Castro Ortega, Queens (NC)
Reigning champion and NCAA record-holder, Queens senior Patri Castro Ortega, smashed her previous Division II record, winning the women’s 500 free by almost a full pool length in 4:39.28. Castro Ortega was out immediately and had put a full body length between herself and the rest of the field by the 50. As she continued to distance herself, the race for second looked interesting until Leonie Van Noort of Grand Valley imposed herself on the rest of the crowd. Van Noort touched second in 4:47.95, more than four seconds ahead of West Chester junior Theresa Hayward (4:52.76), Cal Baptist sophomore Christina Halverson (4:53.06), and Drury sophomore Megan Ouhl (4:53.21) who came in together in the next wave.
Lindenwood junior Alecia McGillivray won the consolation final with 4:52.60.

Men’s 500-yard Freestyle
- NCAA DII: 4:20.70 3/11/2016 Dion Dreesens, Queens (NC)
Before the paint on Dion Dreesens’ NCAA record in this event even had a chance to dry, the Queens junior lowered it by another 3.7 seconds to settle the mark at 4:17.09. Dreesens was out quickly and swam on his own for the first 200. West Chester junior Victor Polyakov, runner-up to Dreesens in the 200 free last night, made a push on the third 100 and turned with Dreesens at the 300. Polyakov was only about a half-body length behind over the next 400, but couldn’t quite keep the pace over the final 100 and finished second with 4:20.33, which was also under the NCAA DII mark that Dreesens had set in prelims. Third place went to Adrian VanderHelm of Simon Fraser, whose monster final 100 took him past Queens sophomore Nick Arakelian.
Mackenzie Hamill of Simon Fraser finished fifth in 4:24.39, followed by Daniel Bis of Saint Leo, Missouri S&T’s Jon Glaser (4:26.32), and Indy’s Vitor Botana (4:27.00).
Chandler Pourvahidi of UCSD won the consolation final in 4:26.99.

Women’s 100-yard Backstroke
- NCAA DII: 52.45 3/14/2014 Mary Hanson, Cal Baptist
After finishing fourth last year, Queens junior Hannah Peiffer claimed the 2016 title in the women’s 100 back with a 53.51. Wingate junior Viktoriya Arkhipova placed second in 53.69.
LIU Post senior Seren Jones edged Findlay senior Jessica Ward, 54.70 to 54.90, for third. MSU Mankato sophomore Cecilia Hake was just behind at 55.06.

In the most exciting race of the night, Lindenwood sophomore Serghei Golban won the men’s 100 back in a photo finish, hitting the wall in 46.56. Florida Southern junior Marco Palacios was right behind in 46.71, followed by Queens senior Zack Phelps (46.76). Senior Pawel Trenda of Saint Leo was in the mix as well, touching fourth at 47.14.

Women’s 100-yard Breaststroke

West Florida junior Theresa Michalak came within a half-second of the NCAA record, winning a very close battle in 1:01.05. Senior Brittney Phelan of Queens came in second with 1:01.13. 2015 runner-up Jade Arganbright of California University (PA) placed third in 1:01.39.
Following Arganbright was a wave of breaststrokers: Nova Southeastern sophomore Malin Westman (1:01.79), Queens freshman Shelly Prayson (1:01.83), Zuzanna Chwadeczko of Drury (1:01.90), Rebecca Matthews of Lynn (1:02.12), and Olga Kosheleva of Wingate (1:02.88).
Delta State’s Kirsten Stroven won the consolation final with 1:02.14.

Men’s 100-yard Breaststroke
- NCAA DII: 51.63 3/13/2015 Anton Lobanov, Nova S’eastern
Defending champion Anton Lobanov of Nova Southeastern repeated as NCAA champion in the men’s 100 breast with 51.94, just .31 off his own record set in the 2015 championships. Delta State sophomore Alexander Peach moved up from fourth in prelims to finish second with 52.84, just touching out Fresno Pacific sophomore Maksim Shcherbakov (52.95) and Delta State junior Matteo Fraschi (53.19).
Queens senior Rostyslav Fedyna, who had qualified first out of prelims, finished fifth with 53.41. Bloomsburg senior Jake Harner was sixth with 53.69, in front of Florida Southern freshman Sean Kim (54.18) and Queens sophomore Ben Mayes (54.32).
Lindenwood senior Mateusz Pacholczyk took the consolation final with 53.71.

Women’s 200-yard Butterfly

Wingate junior Sofia Petrenko, who finished fourth in this event last year with 2:00.03, was the 2016 national champion with a new NCAA Division II record of 1:57.94. UCSD senior Darielle Watkins was also under the old NCAA mark, going 1:58.60 for second place.
LIU Post senior Joyce Kwok, runner-up in the 100 fly last night, took it out with Petrenko and was actually leading at the 100, but both Petrenko and Watkins closed with strong back halves. Kwok earned the bronze medal nonetheless, touching with 1:59.14.
Queens sophomore Mckenzie Stevens went 1:59.92 for fourth, while Lindenwood junior Hannah Vinyard improved on her eighth-place finish from 2015 to go 2:00.50 for fifth. Queens freshman Josephina Lorda was sixth with 2:02.54. Simon Fraser junior Lauren Swistak and William Jewell junior Paige Meredith rounded out the championship final.
UC San Diego senior Naomi Thomas won the consolation with 2:02.13.

Men’s 200-yard Butterfly
- NCAA DII: 1:42.96 3/13/2015 Matthew Josa, Queens (NC)
The championship final of the men’s 200 fly was a thrilling two-man battle between 2015 runner-up Thiago Sickert of Nova Southeastern and 2015 bronze medalist Gianni Ferrero of Grand Valley State. Ferrero was up by .5 at the 100 and .6 at the 150, but he ran out of steam and Sickert outsplit him by a full second over the last 50 yards. Sickert got the touch with 1:44.69, while Ferrero hung on for second with 1:45.07.
Findlay sophomore Janko Radmanovic had the fastest final 50 of them all, blasting a 27.27 to move from fourth to third with a 1:45.96 to 1:46.16 victory over UCSD sophomore Kevin Wylder for the bronze medal.
Freshman Cristian Vasquez of Lindenwood touched out West Chester junior Eric Long, 1:47.45 to 1:47.48, for fifth. Senior Joshua Hanson of Cal Baptist finished seventh with 1:47.98, ahead of Wayne State freshman Rasmus Olsen of (1:48.97).
Truman State sophomore Will Shanel won the consolation final in 1:47.57.

Women’s 1-meter Diving
- NCAA DII: 511.55 3/10/2011 Kayla Kelosky, Clarion
West Florida junior Monica Amaral won her second diving championship of the meet with a score of 494.90 on the 1-meter board. Grand Valley senior Taylor Wiercinski came in second with 491.60 points. Amaral and Wiercinski were third and fourth in this event a year ago.
Morgan Dunleavy of Tiffin was the bronze medalist with 463.65 points, just edging Carleen Wayne of Lindenwood (462.95).

Women’s 800-yard Freestyle Relay
- NCAA DII: 7:14.69 3/13/2015 Queens (NC)
After a 1:46.24 leadoff from Castro Ortega, it was unlikely anyone would catch Queens in the 800 free relay. Castro Ortega was followed by Caroline Arakelian in 1:50.67, Lorda in 1:49.56, and Stevens in 1:49.74 for a combined time of 7:16.21. The quartet was 1.5 seconds off their meet record time of 7:14.69 from 2015 NCAAs and 3.2 off their NCAA DII mark of 7:12.96 from the 2016 Bluegrass Mountain Conference championships.
UC San Diego’s Watkins, Natalie Tang, Madelyn Huttner and Colleen Daley went 7:18.95 for second, while Wingate (Petrenko, Arkhipova, Hanna Van Horen, and Maria Madsen) came in third with 7:22.48.

Men’s 800-yard Freestyle Relay

Queens took a 2.6-second bite out of their 2015 NCAA record with a 6:23.62 victory in the 800 free relay with Dreesens (1:32.63), Ben Taylor (1:36.26), Arakelian (1:36.27), and Parker Cook-Weeks (1:38.46).
Wingate (Jerome Heidrich, Leif-Henning Klever, Lennart Queiss, and Ossian Arvidsson) finished second in 6:28.21, while Nova Southeastern (Marco Aldabe, Sickert, Victor Tarin, and David Van Der Colff) got the bronze with 6:30.84.
