2016 Massachusetts Boys State: St John’s Prep Wins, Weston Repeats

Multiple records fell at the 2016 Massachusetts Boys State Swimming and Diving Championship. In Division 1,  St John’s Prep avenged their 2015 defeat at the hands of Westford Academy. In Division Weston continued won yet another championship, although they were pushed all the way by neighborly rivals Wayland.

Division 1 Highlights:

Three state records were set over the course of the competition. Leading the way was Acton-Boxborough junior Corben Miles, who broke his own state record in the 50 free with a 20.31. Miles was also instrumental in Acton-Boxborough’s winning 200 medley relay, splitting 19.48 in a field where just one other swimmer got under 21 seconds.

Miles would come up just short of Nick D’Innocenzo’s 2009 state record in the 100 freestyle (45.10). He swam 45.15 and had to settle for a meet record.

The rest of the record breaking belonged to Westford Academy. They first set a state record with their 200 freestyle relay. The foursome of Jason Jung, Florian Haedicke, Kyle Pilachowski and Jack Koravos swam to 1:25.15, improving on the previous record of 1:25.85.

Jung, Haedicke and Koravos teamed up with Jeffrey Yao to set the 400 freestyle relay record at the conclusion of the meet. They recorded a 3:07.83, breaking Westford’s own record from 2014.

Top three team scores in Division 1:

  1. Saint John’s Prep 287
  2. Westford Academy 266
  3. Acton-Boxborough 250

Division 2 Highlights

All eyes were on Johnny Williams at this competition. The Northampton senior had tied the oldest Massachusetts state record on the books earlier in the season, Bog Hagberg’s 49.14 100 butterfly from 1976. This was Williams last chance to claim sole ownership of the record.

Williams did get the record, swimming 49.03 off an aggressive 22.60 opening.  He also swam the fastest 50 fly (21.9) of the competition on the 200 medley relay and led off Northampton’s 2nd place 400 freestyle relay.

The rest of the drama at this competition was provided by the back and forth battle between Weston and Wayland. Weston, who has won the last four state championships and 23 in all since 1983, actually trailed Wayland with two events to go. Weston then pulled ahead with a 3rd and 10th place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Still, Weston needed to beat Wayland (or finish only two spots lower) in the final relay to confirm the victory. They did so, finishing 4th to Wayland’s 6th.

Top three team scores for Division 2:

  1. Weston 215
  2. Wayland 206
  3. Norwell 202
