Guilherme Guido Misses Brazilian Record By .01 on Day 2 Prelims

2016 MARIA LENK TROPHY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Note: This recap was originally done in “real-time.”

After warming up in the prelims of the 100 fly on Friday, Brazil’s top female swimmer Etiene Medeiros will take on the 100 back prelims on Saturday in the Olympic Aquatic Center. Her swim will be the highlight of a day that is otherwise not in the primary scope of Britain’s medal hopes, though Joao de Luca’s 200 free could shift that perspective.

Women’s 100 Back – PRELIMS

  • Brazilian Record: Etiene Medeiros, 59.61, 2015
  • FINA ‘A’ Qualification Standard: 1:00.25
  • ‘A’ Qualifiers from Brazilian Open: None

Etiene Medeiros ensured that the disaster from December’s Open Championships, where she missed the FINA “A” time, wouldn’t happen again. She swam a 1:00.00, which is a new Maria Lenk Championship Record, and with no other Brazilians close to the FINA “A” standard, all-but-guaranteed her spot for the Olympics.

In finals, she’ll have at least a small push from Slovakia’s Katarina Listopadova, who was 1:01.16 in prelims. International swimmers are allowed in A-Finals, and there will be two on Saturday night in this race – China’s 15-year old Yifan Yang swam 1:03.92 to qualify 8th.

Natalia de Luccas was the second-fastest Brazilian in 1:02.64. She’s been as fast as 1:01.3 in the race.

Minas Tenis’ Nicolas Oliveira pushed himself further-ahead in the qualifying battle for the men’s 200 free by swimming a 1:46.97 in prelims of the men’s 200 free.

He was out seven-tenths faster on the front-half of this race than was Joao de Lucca, his only real competitor domestically in the race, and that was about the final margin as well, as de Lucca took 2nd in 1:47.77.

Andre Pereira (1:49.36) and 17-year old Felipe Ribeiro de Souza (1:49.39) made the strongest bid in prelims to join them on the 800 free relay, with Argentina’s Federico Grabich matching Riberio’s 1:49.39.

Women’s 100 Breast – PRELIMS

  • Brazilian Record: Tatiana Sakemi, 1:07.67, 2009
  • FINA ‘A’ Qualification Standard: 1:07.85
  • ‘A’ Qualifiers from Brazilian Open: None

An Argentine led the way, as Macarena Ceballos swam 1:08.73 to just-barely miss her own National Record, but qualify 1st into finals, of the women’s 100 breaststroke. She swam 1:08.73, which puts her within a second of the FINA ‘A’ standard in the event.

The next two-best breaststrokers were both from Pinheiros, a club known for producing men’s breaststrokers (including 3 of the top 5 in the 100 of that final last night). Jhennifer Alves (1:09.08), who’s only 18-years old, is the country’s best chance of developing a real international-level breaststroker in the coming years. She already ranks 3rd all-time in Brazilian history in the event. Her teamamte Ana Carvalho qualified 3rd in 1:09.19.

Top 8 Qualifiers to Finals:

Men’s 100 Back – PRELIMS

  • Brazilian Record: Guilherme Guido, 53.09, 2015
  • FINA ‘A’ Qualification Standard: 54.36
  • ‘A’ Qualifiers from Brazilian Open: Guilherme Guido (53.09)

Guilherme Guido nearly-matched his Brazilian National Record in prelims of the men’s 100 backstroke, but had to settle for a new Championship Record in 53.10.

That’s .01 seconds from his season-best and Brazilian Record from December that has him ranked 6th in the world this season.

There are no serious threats to knock Guido off the Olympic team in this event, but there’s four other swimmers who were within half-a-second of giving Brazil a second Olympic qualifier in the event. That group is led by Henrique Rodrigues, who swam 54.70 to cut four-tenths from his personal best in the event and move up to 8th-place in Brazil’s all-time rankings in prelims.

Only 10 men in the country’s history had been better than 55 seconds in this event coming into the day, and 5 did so in prelims – all from the same Pinheiros club.

Top 8 Qualifiers:

  1. Guilherme Guido, Pinheiros, 53.10
  2. Henrique Rodrigues, Pinheiros, 54.70
  3. Leonardo Guedes, Pinheiros, 54.85
  4. Fabio Santi, Pinheiros, 54.86
  5. Vitor Guaraldo, Pinheiros, 54.88
  6. Fernando Pires, Corinthians, 55.40
  7. Gabriel Fantoni, Fiat/Minas, 55.47
  8. Henrique Handa, Pinheiros, 55.48

Women’s 400 Free – PRELIMS

  • Brazilian Record: Manuella Lyrio, 4:09.96, 2015
  • FINA ‘A’ Qualification Standard: 4:09.08
  • ‘A’ Qualifiers from Brazilian Open: None

Even a National Record at the Open Championships in December wasn’t enough for Manuella Lyrio to guarantee herself a spot on the Olympic Team in the women’s 400 free, and she was even further from the boundary on Saturday morning.

Lyrio was the top-placing Brazilian in prelims with a 4:16.89, trailing Japan’s Chinatsu Sato (4:15.99) into the final. This was Lyrio’s first swim of the meet, and she’ll need to get refocused for finals if she hopes to earn her spot on the Olympic Team.

Her teammate Aline Rodrigues qualified 3rd in 4:17.44.

Top 8 Qualifiers into finals:

  1. Chinatsu Sato, Japan, 4:15.99
