2016 Mare Nostrum Tour – Canet: Hosszu Shines At Day 1 Prelims

2016 MARE NOSTRUM TOUR – CANET EN ROUSSILLON

The first session of the second stage of the Mare Nostrum Tour got under way this morning in Canet en Roussillon, France, with plenty of big names continuing to post some impressive results in the lead up to the Olympics in August.

The most impressive showing from the morning was from Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, who took the top seed in all four of her events. Hosszu heads into finals as the top seed in the 50 back (28.20), 200 back (2:09.93), 200 IM (2:09.35), and 200 free (1:58.25). Hosszu earned five wins at the first stop in Monaco, and could potentially win more here, but will have much tighter gaps between events come finals than she did this morning.

On the men’s side Kosuke HaginoJames Guy and Chad Le Clos all competed in multiple events this morning, with all but Le Clos qualifyng for the A final in all. Hagino qualified 1st in the 400 IM (4:15.43), 3rd in the 200 back (2:00.16), and 5th in the 200 free (1:49.44). Guy qualified 5th overall in the 400 free (3:51.42) and 3rd in the 200 free (1:48.37), while Le Clos qualified easily for the 100 fly final in 2nd (52.47) but just missed the 200 free final placing 9th in 1:49.66 and has been relegated to the B final.

Other top seeds from this morning on the women’s side include Jeanette Ottesen in the women’s 50 free (25.13), Rikke Moller Pedersen in the women’s 100 breast (1:08.09), and Katerine Savard in the women’s 100 fly (58.37).

On the men’s side Andriy Govorov (50 free), Yannick Agnel (200 free), and Devon Myles Brown (400 free) grabbed the top seeds in the freestyle events, while Chris Walker-Hebborn (50 back) and Christian Diener (200 back) lead the backstroke events into tonight. Ross Murdoch (100 breast) and Steffen Diebler (100 fly) lead the other two events.

B finals will begin at 4 PM local time (10 AM EDT), and the A finals begin at 6 PM local time (12 PM EDT).
