2016 CCSA Day 2: Incarnate Word, Florida Gulf Coast On Top

2016 MEN’S & WOMEN’S CCSA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Florida Gulf Coast University’s women’s swimming and diving team looks well on their way to once again winning the CCSA championship. On the men’s side, Incarnate Word is locked in a battle with defending champion UMBC. Incarnate Word leads by just 18 points after the second day of competition.

Women’s 500 Freestyle:

Florida Gulf Coast’s Lani Cabrera defended her conference championship, although she came up just short of her own conference record. Cabrera got pressed by teammate Linda Shaw, who actually led with 50 yards to go before Cabrera surged past. Even though Cabrera graduates the future looks bright for the Eagles in this event- Shaw and teammate Marissa Marinheiro (5th place) are both just freshmen.

Top three:

  1. Lani Cabrera, FGCU4:47.53
  2. Linda Shaw, FGCU 4:48.17
  3. Kristin VanDeventer, Liberty, 4:52.00

Men’s 500 Freestyle

Incarnate Word’s Kyrylo Shvets led two teammates into the championship final of this event. Shvets actually let teammate Connor Hennessy set the pace in early going, before moving past the field in the back half of the race.

UMBC’s Felix Richtsfeld got in between the two Cardinals, but despite closing well was two far behind Shvets to win in the end.

Top three:

  1. Kyrylo Shvets, UIW 4:25.51
  2. Felix Richtsfeld, UMBC 4:26.26
  3. Connor Hennessy, UIW 4:26.84

Women’s 200 IM

FGCU’s Fanny Teijonsalo staked her claim as the league’s best newcomer in this race. After setting a conference record in the prelims (2:00.08), she lowered it nearly two more seconds in the final to win in 1:58.29. Also swimming under the record was teammate Barbara Caraballo.

Christina Elmgreen made it a clean sweep for the Eagles.

Top three

  1. Fanny Teijonsalo, FGCU 1:58.29
  2. Barbara Caraballo, FGCU 1:59.64
  3. Christina Elmgreen, FGCU 2:01.02

Men’s 200 IM

Incarnate Word’s David Moore made it back to back wins for the Cardinals. He broke a four way race at the halfway point open with a devastating breaststroke leg (30.01) before cruising to victory in 1:45.68.

Despite improving, UMBC’s Nikola Trajkovic was unable to defend his 2015 title and had to settle for second. Old Dominion scored a nice 3-4 finish.

Top three:

  1. David Moore, UIW 1:45.68
  2. Nikola Trajkovic, UMBC 1:46.63
  3. Reed Matthews, ODU 1:47.14

Women’s 50 Freestyle

Katie Latham kept FGCU’s streak alive in this event after the graduation of conference record holder Emma Svensson. She was able to hold off a pair of Liberty swimmers in Kendall Hough and Rachel Hoeve. Hough was the top returner in the event and made a nice improvement but it wasn’t enough.

Once again, FGCU put four total swimmers in the A-Final and continued to put distance between themselves and the rest of the league.

Top three:

  1. Katie Latham, FGCU 22.64
  2. Kendal Hough, Liberty 22.67
  3. Rachel Hoeve, Liberty 22.99

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Due to a misfire in the preliminaries, defending champion Gregor Spoerlein found himself in the B-final. Gardner Webb’s Nathan Lile, who was fastest on the relay a day ago, took full advantage to win as the only swimmer under 20 seconds. Old Dominion’s Jacob Zeidler was well back in second, while a pair of FAU teammates tied for third

Spoerlein managed a time in the B Final that would have given him a clear second place:

Top three

  1. Nathan Lile, Gardner-Webb 19.98
  2. Jacob Zeidler, ODU 20.26
  3. Tie between Matthiew Burtez and John Nolte of FAU at 20.46

Men’s 3M Diving

Just as the day before, FAU’s Ryan McIntire was the class of the field in diving. McIntire just barely missed breaking his own conference meet record. Both ODU (2nd/3rd/9th) and UMBC (5-7th) were able to capitalize on the small diving field.

Top three

  1. Ryan McIntire FAU 347.55
  2. Corey Moreno, ODU 343.95
  3. Danny Rabe, ODU 339.75

Women’s 200 Freestyle Relay

The relay shaped up to be an even matchup between FGCU and Liberty. Fanny Teijonsalo ended up with the decisive leg, as she staked the Eagles a half second lead that would match the margin of victory in the end. Liberty’s Rachel Hoeve (22.43) had the fastest split, just ahead of 50 free champion Latham (22.45)

Top three:

  1. FGCU 1:30.62
  2. Liberty 1:31.08
  3. Campbell 1:33.77

Men’s 200 Freestyle Relay

Nathan Lile swam out of his mind leading off Gardner-Webb’s relay. The senior cranked a 19.54, which is four tenths faster than he won the 50 freestyle in earlier in the session. The time is also a conference record by a similar margin.

Old Dominion would claw their way back from almost a second of deficit, ending up just a hair behind. UMBC was well back in third.

Top three:

  1. Gardner-Webb 1:20.07
  2. Old Dominion 1:20.12
