Excitement abounded from the opening bell, when Reilly Lanigan of NASA Wildcat Aquatics edged Magnolia Aquatic Club’s Caitlin Clements, 2:02.60 to 2:02.62, to win the women’s 200 free. 15-year-old Jack Dolan of Rockwood Swim Club followed up with an upset win in the men’s race, dropping 1.4 seconds for a 1:51.65 final time.
Kara Eisenmann dropped nearly 1.5 seconds to upset her Lakeside Aquatic Club teammate Lauren Pitzer in the 100 fly; Eisenmann went 1:00.51 to win by 1.2 seconds. It was much closer in the men’s race, where only .51 separated the first five finishers. Lakeside’s Alvin Jiang got the win with 55.41, erasing a half-second from his seed time. Shaine Casas (55.47), Rockwood’s Dolan (55.80), Michael Schwers from Fox Valley (55.90), and Isaac Gwin of Nitro (55.92) followed in quick succession.
14-year-old Annika Wagner of NASA Wildcat Aquatics, who barely made it into the A final, erased 1.2 seconds from her seed time and won the 400 IM with 4:55.50. Lakeside’s Emma Garfield dropped 1.5 to finish second with 4:56.81. Lanigan took third with 4:58.29. City of Midland’s Braden Vines eked out a win in the men’s race over Longhorn Aquatics’ Mason Tenney, 4:31.23 to 4:31.73.
Kansas City Blazers women (Haley Hines, Taylor Acheson, Lauren Peterson, and Kathrine Sullivan) and Lakeside men (Alvin Jiang, Garrett Hollcraft, Ethan Kramer, and Alexander Zettle) each pulled off upset wins in their 400 free relays. KCB bettered their seed time by 8/10 to win the women’s race in 3:53.54, while LAC went 3.1 seconds faster than their entry time to take the men’s contest with 3:29.88.
