2015 Patriot League Championships Day One: Navy M,W Win 3 of 4 Relays to Jump to Early Leads

2015 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships

200 Medley Relay

The Naval Academy jumped out to an early lead in the women’s meet when Elizabeth Graeff (25.96), Hanna Gillcrist (28.32), Kenzie Margroum (24.56), and Maddie Thompson (22.53) won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.37, just .25 off the meet and conference record. Navy won by a body length over Bucknell (Emma Levendoski, Ashley Henderson, Julianna Foss, and Maddi Marcheskie-1:42.61) and Lehigh (Alissa Leung, Melissa Feeney, Kelly Carroll, and Kaitlyn Riffing-1:43.53). Army turned in a 1:43.73 for fourth, followed by BU (1:44.18), Colgate (1:45.57), American (1:45.96), Lafayette (1:48.82), and Holy Corss (1:54.85).

It was Army with the win in the men’s contest. Josh Sembrano (22.66); Colin Kanzari (25.01), Michael Dustin (21.18), and Chris Szekely (19.27) combined for 1:28.12, breaking a Kinney Natatorium pool record but leaving the meet and conference marks intact. Navy (David Carlson, Marlin Brutkiewicz, Jonathan Debaugh, and Dain Bomberger) finished second in 1:28.65. BU placed third (Connor Stuewe, Daniel Andronov, Ryan Bach, and Linc Kupke-1:29.53). Bucknell’s quartet was next with 1:30.46, then Lafayette (1:31.84), Lehigh (1:32.19), Loyola (1:32.47), and Holy Cross (1:35.31).

Men’s 3-Meter Diving

Navy freshman Nate Belch (334.10) and senior Joe Esposito (283.65) went 1-2 on the 3-meter board to move the Midshipmen into first place. Jon Jones (281.45) of Bucknell was third, with Adam Bross (270.95) of BU, Josh Urnezis (262.65), Ryan Conley (258.00) and Noel Theroux (253.10) of Loyola, and Tyler Wenzel (246.05) of Bucknell making up the rest of the championship final.

800 Freestyle Relay

In the women’s 800 free relay, the women of Annapolis crushed the meet, conference and pool records with a speedy 7:16.12 from Margroum (1:48.72), Jenny Smith (1:50.10), Charlotte Meyer (1:48.75), and Thompson (1:49.15). Lehigh (Carolyn Koch, Meghan Thompson, Courtney Patterson, and Julianne Koch) went 7:20.31 for second, just off the previous marks. Boston University (Mika Spencer, Alexsa Savage, Lauren Dixon, and Stephanie Nasson) went 7:24.57 for third. The rest of the field included Colgate (7:25.60), Bucknell (7:27.26), Army (7:31.84), Loyola (7:34.31), American (7:40.46), Lafayette (7:41.98), and Holy Cross (7:49.03).

The Midshipmen rewrote all the records in the men’s race, as well. Thomas Duvall (1:35.20), Alex Nickell (1:37.00), Noah Martin (1:38.48), and Riley Mita (1:37.52) went a combined 6:28.20 to claim the conference title. BU’s Stuewe, Mario Caballero, Cole Puchi, and Andy Vazquez (6:35.25) were runners-up, while third place went to Bucknell (Louis Behnen, Erik Heinemann, Denver Freeman, and Chris Devlin-6:35.98). Rounding out the event were Army (6:36.54), Lehigh (6:41.63), Colgate (6:47.86), Loyola (6:52.72), American (6:54.55), Lafayette (6:59.46), and Holy Cross (7:05.06). Lafayette and Holy Cross, in particular, had enormous drops from their seed times.
