Girls’ Meet

Abbey Weitzeil is so used to breaking national records by now that one or two more don’t merit much emotion from the Saugus senior, if they aren’t up to her standards. Weitzeil broke the national high school records in both the 50 free (21.83) and 100 free (47.53) on Thursday at the CIF-SS Division I prelims, and never cracked a smile. But the third time, when she lowered her 100 free record leading off Saugus’ 400 free relay (47.42), she smiled, saying “well, that was better.”

JSerra began with a medley relay that nearly broke the D1 record, set by Edison in 2010. Katie Glavinovich (26.80), Catherine Lowengrub (29.52), Sonia Wang (24.11), and Kaitlyn Albertoli (23.16) combined for 1:43.59, missing the D1 mark by .25. Corona del Mar, Santa Margarita, Ventura, and Woodbridge all posted 1:45s.

Santa Margarita and Woodbridge dominated the 200 free, with Samantha Shelton (1:48.09), Katie McLaughlin (1:48.41) and Sydney Franzen (1:50.09) representing the former, and Kathryn Krolikowski (1:49.89) and Daniela Georges (1:49.96), the latter.

JSerra senior Wang broke the D1 record in the 200 IM, clocking a 1:58.28 to lead the qualifiers for finals. Kirsten Vose (1:59.23) of Flintridge Sacred Heart and Nikol Popov (1:59.51) of Valencia were second and third.

Weitzeil’s 21.83 was the fastest 50 free by 1.5 seconds; the next two qualifiers were Albertoli of JSerra (23.31) and Katherine Wagner of Bishop Alemany (23.38). Albertoli was also second in the 100 with 50.33, just ahead of Samantha Shelton of Santa Margarita (50.42).

Corona del Mar freshman Eva Merrell threw down an incredible 51.98 to lead the prelims qualifiers; McLaughlin of Santa Margarita went 53.50 for second, while Mik Ranslem of Hart clocked a 55.00 for third. Merrell was also the top qualifier in the 100 back with 53.86, just ahead of Wang from JSerra and Courtney Mykkanen of Foothill.

Georges of Woodbridge was the fastest 500 free qualifier with 4:50.70. She was followed by Brittany Kampfer of Mater Dei (4:51.90) and Franzen of Santa Margarita (4:53.47).

Defending champion Nikol Popov of Valencia was a second off the meet record with her 1:00.23 prelims-leading time. She was a full two seconds faster than Vose (1:02.23) and Meagan Popp of Corona del Mar (1:00.72).

Santa Margarita was the leading 400 free relay behind McLaughlin (48.69), Franzen (52.09), Camryn Barry (51.90), and Shelton (51.29).

Boys’ Meet

University posted the top 200 medley relay time of 1:31.31 with Danny Tran (23.16), Judd Howard (25.27), Andrew Knoell (22.47), and William Hofstadter (20.41). Loyola (1:32.68) and Dos Pueblos (1:32.91) qualified second and third.

Santa Margarita junior Grant Shoults clocked a 1:37.98 to lead the field in the 200 free. Servite’s Stephen Marcin (1:38.17) and Capo Valley’s Nick Norman (1:38.72) will challenge him from lanes 6 and 4, respectively, in finals. It was the same trio in a different order in the 500: Norman (4:20.57), then Shoults (4:21.04) and Marcin (4:22.43). Dana Hills junior Shane Forker qualified fourth in both races.

University went 1-2 in prelims in the 200 IM with Ken Takahashi (1:47.98) and Tran (1:48.48). Loyola’s Sean Lee (1:48.74) knocked almost 2 seconds off his seed time to qualify third.

Hart senior Cole Cogswell blasted a 20.34 to lead the 50 freestyle qualifiers. Hofstadter of University (20.80) and San Clemente’s Aidan Pastel (21.02) will challenge him in finals for the title. In the 100, it was Cogswell (44.04), Hofstadter (44.78), and Kevin Dai of Valencia (45.78) at the top of the standings.

Defending champion and current D1 record-holder, Alex Valente of Dos Pueblos, was the fastest qualifier in the 100 fly by nearly two seconds with 47.46. Loyola’s Lee (49.26) and Josh Swart of San Clemente (49.32) were the next-fastest qualifiers.

The 200 free relay put Hart within 7/10 of the D1 meet record, as Cogswell (20.36), Austin Barreiro (20.59), Ryan Brimer (21.27), and Adam Osowski (21.06) combined for 1:23.28.

Tran of University and Swart of San Clemente went 48.89 and 48.91 to top the field in the 100 back. Thomas Smith of Edison qualified third in 49.13, while Dos Pueblos’ Valente (50.09) was fourth.

University’s Howard clocked an event-leading 55.04 in the 100 breast, qualifying just ahead of Harvard-Westlake’s Alexander Hsing (55.30) and Corona del Mar’s Tyler Lin (55.32).

Once again it was the quartet from Hart leading the field in the 400 free relay: Barreiro (46.63), Osowski (46.62), Brimer (47.05), and Cogswell (44.00) combined for 3:04.30. Loyola (3:05.29), University (3:05.84), and Dos Pueblos (3:05.88) were the next qualifiers.

The finals will take place on Saturday, May 16 at 5 p.m.
