Mt. Carmel girls won their second consecutive Division II title, beating Cathedral Catholic by 37 points. The meet was actually closer than the final score might indicate, with the possibility of either team coming out on top. Both teams had strength and depth, placing at least one, and sometimes two, swimmers in every final except the 100 breast, where only Mt. Carmel was present.
La Costa Canyon opened the scoring with a win in the 200 medley relay, going 1:49.42 to beat Mt. Carmel (1:49.85).
For the third year in a row, West Hills junior Sarah Nowaski doubled with wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Her 1:49.91 in the 200 was exactly a second faster than a year ago, and 1.7 ahead of second-place finisher Jessica Pentlarge of Cathedral Catholic (1:51.61). La Jolla’s Ciara Franke was third in 1:55.20. In the 500, Nowaski won with 4:53.80, nearly 12 seconds in front of the field. Karina Hankee or Horizon Christian (5:05.57) and Heloise Leblanc of Canyon Crest (5:10.70) were second and third.
Christian High School junior Taylor Lynch was also a double winner, earning titles in both the 200 IM and 100 breast. Lynch edged defending champion Georgia Reilly of Mt. Carmel, 2:06.06 to 2:06.87, in the 200 IM. Cora McClelland of Cathedral Catholic came from behind to get the bronze medal with 2:08.42. In the breast, Lynch defended her 2014 title going nearly 2 seconds faster, with 1:05.30. La Jolla’s Addison Seale (1:07.38) and Riley McDonald of La Costa Canyon (1:07.65) had a close race for second.
Cathedral Catholic senior Mary Roberts repeated as 50 free champion, clocking a 23.91 to beat her 2014 time by .03. Allison Liu of Canyon Crest (24.41) was second, while Sabrina Hughes from Mt. Carmel touched out Carlie Stipe from Classical Academy, 24.58 to 24.59, for third. Liu avenged her second-place finish with a victory in the 100 free, going 51.69. Mckenzie Kelly of La Jolla Country Day (52.01) and Ciara Franke from La Jolla High (52.51) rounded out the podium.
Escondido Charter senior Taylor Pamplin broke her own record in 1-meter diving, racking up 317.20 points. Second was Shelby Steiger of Mission Vista (261.60), ahead of Jackie Real of La Jolla (255.20).
Junior Cora McClelland of Cathedral Catholic won back-to-back titles in the 100 fly, this time going 55.53 for the win. Rachel Kulik from La Costa Canyon (56.51) edged Karina Thomson of Classical Academy (56.86) for second place.
Mt. Carmel senior Reilly won the 100 back for the third time, with 56.75. Pentlarge picked up her second silver medal, coming to the wall in 57.43 ahead of La Jolla Country Day’s Kelly (59.59).
Cathedral Catholic broke the D2 record in the 200 free relay with 1:37.47 and won the 400 free relay in 3:33.42.

The boys’ meet started out with a bang as the top three 200 medley relay teams, La Costa Canyon (1:34.77), La Jolla (1:36.30), and Valhalla (1:36.85) all came in under the D2 record of 1:34.14 set in 2012 by Mt. Carmel.
La Costa Canyon senior Liam McClosky, previously in Division I, won the 200 free in 1:39.70. Parker Seale of La Jolla took second with 1:41.37, while Alexander Santana of Canyon Crest Academy placed third in 1:43.96.
Del Norte sophomore Austin Nguyen won a nail-biter in the 200 IM, out-touching La Costa Canyon’s Mitch Scarski, 1:54.71 to 1:54.84 over the last 25 yards. Del Norte teammate Dorian Humbert finished third in 1:56.05. Nguyen doubled with a 56.94 win in the 100 breast. La Jolla’s Seale was second in 57.65. Ryan Clancy of La Costa Canyon rounded out the podium with 58.92.
Valhalla senior Michael Salazar earned the first of his two titles with a 20.67 victory in the 50 free. Riley Ferguson of Coronado went 21.10 for second, while Liam McCallum of Del Norte took third with 21.77. Salazar then won the 100 fly with a Section and D2 record of 48.50. La Costa Canyon’s McClosky, who also came in under the previous D2 mark of 49.03, was second in 48.99, while Brendan Santana of Canyon Crest came in third with 49.08.
Drew Webb of Del Norte broke the D2 record and came close to the Section record in 1-meter diving with 353.35 points. Chase Webster from Santana (315.35) and Mason Mercer of Canyon Crest (264.55) were second and third, respectively.
Del Norte senior Christian Leon won the 100 free in 47.11, holding off Garret Schmid of Canyon Crest (47.17) who was charging in at the finish. Cory Davidson from Ramona took third with 47.49.
Sophomore Santana of Canyon Crest Academy won the 100 back, touching in 50.19. Brendan Barry of Cathedral Catholic clocked a 51.29 for second, while La Costa Canyon’s Scarski went 52.28 for third.
Del Norte High School swept the freestyle relays, winning the 200 in 1:26.38 and the 400 in 3:10.47. Doronado was second in the 200 with 1:27.09 over La Costa Canyon (1:27.28); La Jolla edged Valhalla, 1:30.99 to 3:11.94, for second place in the 400.
