Editor’s note: to avoid confusion for some of our readers less familiar, or who are internationals, this meet is an American Championship largely in name only, and is not sanctioned by USA Swimming, the NCSA, or the YMCA that we’re aware of as an actual national championship meet.
Details regarding the first day of the American Short Course Championships taking place at the University of Texas’ Lee and Jamail Texas Swimming Center beginning tomorrow are available below, with several big names scheduled to be in attendance. Remember, this is actually a dual club meet/NCAA last chance meet (for men), so we will see some of the sport’s younger top performers intermingled with collegians trying to shave off whatever time they can to get closer to the right side of the cut line for this month’s NCAA championships.
Thursday’s events set us up to see an NBAC inter-club battle in the women’s 500 freestyle, with Lotte Friis, Becca Mann, Sierra Schmidt and Allison Schmitt all situated at the top of the entrants. The men have Club Seminole’s Zane Grothe as the top seed, with North Baltimore Aquatic Club’s Frank Dyer and Tom Luchsinger in the mix. But, they will be chased down by University of Texas swimmers Jake Ritter and Cory Lorria, as well as Texas A&M’s Kyle Whieldon who are among the collegiate contingent gunning for NCAA qualifying times in the event.
In the women’s 200 IM, 18-year-old sprint sensation Abbey Weitzeil is the top seed with her time of 1:58.13, and she will have Becca Mann, Quinn Carrozza and Daniela Georges with which to contend. Austin Surhoff (NBAC) , leads the charge for the men, but he will be flanked by two strong swimmers in Nitro Swimming’s Sean Grieshop and University of Texas’ Jared Butler. Tucker Wells from SMU, as well as Daniel Graviss from Missouri are two more of the NCAA athletes attempting to get NCAA qualifying times in the event. Last year’s invite time for the men sat at 1:44.71, to the top seed of these, Butler, would need to drop about two seconds to clear that mark.
The prelims of the women’s 50 free should set up a blistering splash n’ dash final, as Abbey Weitzeil, Amanda Weir, Quinn Carrozza and Ariel Weech will spin it out in the morning to position themselves in the middle of the pool for the evening session. Several college athletes are set to compete on the men’s side, as Jordy Groters (Missouri), Cory Bolleter (Texas A&M), Ziga Cerkovnik (SMU) and Andrew Skowronek (Texas) represent just a few of the NCAA men with a one-track mind to get closer and closer to their championship qualifying time.

And what a massive ego to believe it’s a national championship! 😆
That meet is just another meet.
Back to the competition, I see a big NBAC delegation. It will be again very interesting to see where Allison Schmitt is.
I also see a big Californian delegation with young sprint phenom Abbey Weitzeil as biggest name.
And I finally see distance and IM young phenom Sean Grieshop as the biggest name of the local swimmers.
I don’t know the level of rest for each of these swimmers but we’ll probably see interesting times.
