2014 MEN’S PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 4 FINALS REAL-TIME RECAPS

Headed into the final day of this meet, Cal has opened up a 50 point lead (including all diving), and will have four extra A-finalists tonight to boot. Though there’s still the matter of the 1650 free in the evening which won’t be accounted for in these up/downs, Cal’s Jeremy Bagshaw is the top seed in that race and swimming well, so that won’t help Stanford much (though they should outscore Cal in that event alone, with the 2, 7, 8, and 10 seeds, to Cal’s 1, 14, 17, and 28 seeds. Cal will get more points than seed shows, though, as Adam Hinshaw is seeded in a no time, but will definitely score.

This is Cal’s meet to lose. It’s still close enough where a DQ could cause a big swing,

See the full lists of up/downs, along with scores after day 2, in the chart below.

 200 Backstroke – Finals

California freshman Ryan Murphy earned another win with a 1:39.21 to win the event. His teammate Jacob Pebley finished second at 1:40.38. Both swimmers from Cal were under the old PAC-12 Championship record. Stanford’s David Nolan finished third (1:40.60), and his teammate Will Gunderson (1:42.85) earned fourth place points.

100 Freestyle – Finals

Utah’s Nick Soedel has finally put it together in the 100 freestyle. After two years of false starts, Soedel was clean this morning to take the top seed in 41.97 for Utah. Tonight, he was right on his time from this morning, touching the wall at 42.00 to win the event. USC’s Christian Quintero reached in for second place with a 42.47, dropping a few tenths from his morning swim. Seth Stubblefield led his Cal teammates Tyler Messerschmidt and Fabio Gimondi to a 3-4-5 finish, posting times of 42.63, 42.86, and 42.12, respectively.

200 Breaststroke – Finals

Kevin Cordes wins the 200 breaststroke for Arizona with a new meet record time of 1:51.80. Josh Prenot earned second place points, touching the wall at 1:54.37, dropping more than a second from his morning swim. Sam Rowan, Cordes’ teammate, dropped .77 from his morning swim to move from fifth place into third place tonight. USC’s Morten Klaskov finished fourth with a 1:55.86, and Max Williamson from Stanford finished fifth at 1:56.20.

 200 Butterfly – Finals

Arizona State senior Alex Coci made a huge leap to win the 200 butterfly, dropping 1.58 seconds from his morning swim to post a time of 1:42.97. Will Hamilton finished second for the Golden Bears, posting a time of 1:43.13. He led his CAL teammates Long Gutierrez and Marcin Tarczynski to a 2-3-4 finish. Gutierrez touched at 1:43.64 and Tarczynski finished with a 1:43.75. Tom Kremer earned a fifth place finish for Stanford with a 1:43.81.

400 Freestyle Relay – Finals

Cal looked to be the favorites for this relay until a DQ took the relay team out of contention. With Cal Berkeley out of the way, USC swooped in for the win, posting a time of 2:51.95. Christian Quintero led off with a 42.48, and was followed by Dylan Carter (43.04), Jack Wagner (43.49), and Dimitri Colupaev (42.94). Brad Tandy led off for Arizona, who finished second, with an aggressive first 50 (20.06). His lead off split was 42.63. Arizona’s final time was 2:52.35. Utah earned a third place finish with a 2:53.41.

Okay, running off the USA Swimming Data from this morning, here’s where I see things shaking out on NCAA qualification (looks like the formatting for 50 & 100 times doesn’t translate well)…

Doesn’t quite fit here, but I was just watching the video from the 200 medley relay, and I was wondering if anyone knows what the fastest fly split for a 200 medley relay ever is? Tried googling, and couldn’t find anything definite, but I did see Matt Targett go 19.66 in 2009. Anyone know of anyone faster than that?

Does Fleming make it with his 50 split from lead off of 4×100 F.R. with that 19.40?

By the way, excellent swim by Cobleigh in that 200 time trial – I couldn’t find those last day time trial result (thanks for the info OLE 99)…fantastic improvement in one year, coming to Cal with a 1:59.57 and walking/swimming away with a 1:54.97 after his first conference meet…not too shabby!

Yes Fleming’s time counts. He is in the database at 19.40.

Would be interesting to compare statistics for all swimmers by class between Stanford, Cal, and USC, although this is probably best done after NCAA.

TL;DR warning: please, if you don’t like long posts, skip to cliffs at the end, or past the end. I could care less.

‘A’ for effort, but it isn’t easy, or quite constructive, to go bottom up in your detailed analysis, in swimming at least. Trust me, I went down that road for a few years, and the variables are immense, the conclusions non-sequitur – I ended up circling the world of swimming statistics until I had ended up in the same spot I started, with some jewels in my hand, just not the kind I had expected. If you follow?

I had this talk a while ago, with the top statistician(slash epidemiologist) on campus, perhaps the US, and beyond,… Read more »

Easy win for Ryan Murphy in the 200 back.
I thought that Pebley and Nolan would have finished a little closer.
1.36 for him at NCAA’s?

Mr Cordes is again faster than last year at the same meet.
1.52.96 last year. 1.51.80 this year.

At the end and despite the relay disqualification, easy win for Cal.

Murphy is definitely not breaking 1:37 this year. I’d say the 200 back winner (Nolan, Murphy, Conger, Pebley, or Teduits(?)) will be sub 1:38, at maybe 1:37.7 at fastest is more realistic.

I was about to go Inigo Montoya on the word ‘fastest,’ but I’ll just leave you with this: that event is unreal this year. Those guys are ALL stars, and I wouldn’t put it past them, especially Murphs, to be 1:36. I’d set the line at 1:37.7 for the win. That’s even odds, IMO. He was just 1:39 swimming flat as can be. He will be a medal hopeful one day. Book it. Done.
