The Triangle YMCA in Cary, North Carolina is playing host to the YMCA Long Course Swimming Festival this weekend as the Triangle Aquatic Center welcomes 43 teams and over 500 swimmers from around the country to compete. Earlier this year, at the short course edition of the meet, athletes competed virtually, with teams sending in their times swum during the month of March. The first day of racing saw competition in the 100 back, 200 IM, and 50 free, as well as timed finals of the 800 free and 200 medley relay in prelims.

To start off the finals session, Anya Mostek of the Phoenixville Branch YMCA swam to a win in the women’s 100 back. The Harvard University commit was the only swimmer to dip below 1:03.00, touching in 1:02.93. The swim was also Mostek’s first time dipping below the 1:03 mark, as her previous best was a 1:03.06 from the Spring Cup in Richmond earlier this year.

On the men’s side, it was Tommy Janton, who is committed to Notre Dame’s class of 2022, that swam away with the win. Janton finished in 56.16, well faster than his time of 57.57 that was good for 48th at Wave I of the Olympic Trials. His swim from this weekend would have earned him a spot in the B-final of that meet. He also took over half of a second off of his previous best in the race, topping his 56.59 from the spring of 2020.

In the women’s 200 IM, 15-year old Emily Thompson of the Greater Somerset County YMCA came away with the fastest time in 2:16.24. Thompson held off Grey Davis, who finished half a second behind her in 2:16.68. Also representing the Greater Somerset County YMCA, Julia Meisner rounded out the top-3 with a time of 2:20.04.

Committed to the University of Cincinnati’s class of 2021, Erik Menchhofer came away with the win in the 200 IM on the men’s side. Menchhofer won the race easily, touching first by over a second in a time of 2:07.81. The swim was also a huge lifetime best for the recent high school graduate, as going into the meet his top time in the event was 2:10.28 from the 2021 Sectional meet in Elkhart in March.

After winning both the 50 and 100 free at Pennsylvania 3A State Championships in March, Alexa Fulton of Upper Main Line YMCA came away with the win in the 50 free at the YMCA Festival on the first day of racing. The 16-year old beat out Clare Logan to finish in a time of 25.88.

To close out the finals session, 14-year old Thomas Heilman of the Piedmont Family YMCA came away with the win. While he was just off his lifetime best of 23.27, his time of 23.42 put him a quarter of a second ahead of runner-up and teammate Walker Davis. Davis is committed to swim at the University of North Carolina this fall.

During the prelims session in the morning, athletes competed in timed finals of both the 800 free and 200 medley relay.

Winning the women’s 800 was Sarah Barrett. Barrett finished in a time of 8:58.35, well ahead of runner-up Catherine Meisner’s 9:09.61.

For the men, it was Adam Lamping of Powel Crosley Jr. YMCA who came away with the fastest time. Committed to swim at Xavier University this fall, Lamping finished in 8:29.39, well under his previous best of 8:35.32.

The Greater Monmouth YMCA came away with the win in the women’s 200 medley relay in 1:57.20, while for the men it was the Western Branch YMCA that won in 1:45.94.
