Second win for Spain, the Netherlands and Russia

The Netherlands and Russia remain their respective groups’ leaders after the second round of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League 2016, held on Tuesday November 24 in various European cities.

In Group A, World silver medallists the Netherlands faced Hungary, whose squad lost 7-10 at home in Budapest (2-2, 2-1, 1-3, 2-4). Host Italy, third at the last FINA World Championships, eclipsed France 13-5 in Avezzano (3-0, 6-2, 2-1, 4-2).

The Russian squad reinforced its lead of Group B, beating Greece 12-6 (4-0, 3-2, 1-2, 4-2) in the winners’ capital city, while Spain crushed Germany 20-8 in Stuttgart (2-9, 4-3, 1-4, 1-4).

Provisional rankings:
GROUP A:  NED 9 pts (3W)*, HUN 2 (1W, 1L), ITA 4 pts (1W, 2L)*, FRA 0 (2L)
GROUP B:  RUS 6 pts (2W), ESP 5 pts (2W), GRE 1 (2L), GER 0 (2L)

* The two teams had an anticipated third round game (NED 11 – ITA 10) on October 22.

The third round of the women’s European preliminaries will take place on December 8, 2015. The women’sIntercontinental Tournament kicks off February 16 in Lewisville, Texas (USA).
