The Ivy League has started out the new year with a bang as just over the course of this weekend, Harvard’s men took down Arizona State, Princeton’s men took down Navy, and Yale and Penn rewrote Dartmouth’s Karl Michael Pool record book. 13 pool records were broken during Dartmouth’s 2 day meet with Yale and Penn, 11 of which were broken by Yale and 2 by Penn.

Yale’s Aaron Greenberg had an impressive weekend, winning 5 events and breaking 4 pool records. Greenberg won the 100 free in a dual meet season best time of 44.11, which was just off Dean Farris‘ pool record of 44.00. Farris noteably beat ASU’s Cameron Craig twice – in the 100/200 free – the same weekend. Greenberg also won the 50 free, posting a 20.16, which was a pool record, and interestingly, his slowest 50 of the season so far. Greenberg was also on the pool record breaking 200 free, 400 free, and 400 medley relays, throwing down splits of 19.43, 43.72, and 43.90 respectively.

Destiny Nelson (Yale) also put up highly competitive times in the Ivy League at this meet, winning 3 events and breaking 2 pool records. Nelson absolutely shattered the 400 IM record, which stood at 4:27.75 from 1999 before she went 4:21.13. Her splits were as follows: 59.27/1:05.96/1:15.25/1:00.65. That time comes in just over 7 seconds off her best time of 4:13.8. Nelson also won the 200 back and 200 IM. In the 200 back, she went her slowest time of the season, 1:59.61, but still broke the pool record. On the other hand, Nelson went her fastest dual meet 200 IM, 2:02.43.

Kei Hyogo (Yale) put up some of his fastest times this season, winning the 500, 1000, and 200 fly. His 500 time of 4:24.89, in addition to being a pool record, was also his fastest dual meet time of the season. His times in the 1000 and 200 fly (9:14.38/1:49.23) were both his 2nd fastest times this season in their respective events.

Yale’s winning men’s and women’s 400 free relays were also worth noting. Yale took 1st and 2nd in the women’s 400 free relay posting times of 3:27.88 and 3:32.63, however the ‘B’ relay had flying splits of 52.56 and 52.28, which would have made the ‘A’ relay go a time of 3:26.81 if they had replaced the slowest 2 swimmers on the ‘A’. On the other hand, the Yale men’s ‘A’ team ran away with the race and posted the fastest 4 times from Yale swimmers, but their time of 2:58.74 is pretty impressive for a triple dual meet in the first week of January. That time is exactly 3 seconds off the time the same group posted at the Ohio State Invite in November. It also sits within a tapered striking distance of the Yale team record of 2:53.91, which was set just last year. With that time, Yale is sitting not too far outside striking distance for the NCAA ‘A’ cut in the 400 free relay, which sits at 2:52.10.
