World Champ Ning Zetao Injures Shoulder, Pulls Out Of Military Games

Chinese sprinter Ning Zetao scratched the final of the men’s 100 free at the World Military Games after suffering a shoulder injury in the warm up pool.

China’s Sina Sports reports that Ning was warming up for prelims of the 100 free when a female athlete from another nation jumped into the water on top of Ning, injuring his shoulder in the process. (The Sina Sports story is here, in its original Chinese).

Ning competed in prelims, but struggled, was forced to scratch the final while dealing with pain from the shoulder injury. China’s Ifeng news organization reports that Ning could move the arm during prelims, but it swelled during the day and he can no longer lift the arm. (Ifeng’s story is here, in Chinese).

Ning told reporters he would still be attending the finals session to cheer on his teammates and represent China, but it wasn’t clear whether he would compete at all through the rest of the meet.

CNTV.cn captured a photo of Ning on deck at the meet with his arm in a sling, reporting that Ning’s injury was (rough translation) “a soft tissue acute shoulder contusion.”

Ning was the World Champ in the 100 free in Kazan just a few months ago, but hasn’t competed much since then. He swam the Beijing stop of the FINA World Cup, but did not contest the 100 free, instead swimming only the 50 fly.

sun yang swam the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles in Kazan and would have been tested every time in those three races so I doubt that he was running away from a test. But sun,s incident with the female brazilian swimmer was weird and all. The Brazilians contradicted themselves with totally contradictory stories coming out of brazil which was confusing.

As for ning zetao, he swam through the injury and put up a 51.1. No need for him to aggravate the injury.

I like Sun, but his incident is suspicious, but this isn’t, Zetao swam through it to see if it was a true issue and it was, so he won’t compete anymore. That is more legit then random chess pain.

very fishy female swimmer. Can’t help but thinking of the Brazilian female swimmer who kicked Sun Yang in Kazan. There may be conspiracy underlying the two “incidences”.

Just learned this female swimmer is also from Brazil…

He swam through it and did a 51.1 in the prelims, so it isn’t like he saw a drug tester and ran the other way. This is far less fishy sounding than Sun at worlds, and I don’t take to be fishy at all. He’s quite a talent and doesn’t need to risk further injury at this meet.

Those photos of him in a sling definitely look staged for the camera. They are just practicing drug testing avoidance as any good cheating athlete knows to be prepared for this kind of thing.

Come on – here we go again, accusing an asian swimmer of doping without any evidence or whatsoever! Swimming is a global sport and there is a good chance a champion may not be american or white. Asian countries like Japan and China may not have as many top swimmers but do have some incredibly fast swimmers. I am white and not calling anyone racist, but folks please, this is 21st century, globalization is good for our sport! Just be fair and keep an open mind.

But he tested positive for clenbuterol when he was 18. He is a drug cheat; if you think he has stopped then I think you’re a little naive
