Welcome Back…Michael Phelps Warming up in Mesa

It’s almost show time out in Arizona at the Mesa stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series.  Our photographer Mike Lewis is on hand to help tell the visual stories this weekend.  Here’s some of what he grabbed from today’s warm up session at the Skyline Aquatic Center.

Not that that’s the most important thing from the article. I’m happy to hear that he’s done some reflection and is trying to turn over a new leaf. Both for him as a person, and for the potential that might have for him as an athlete heading into Rio.

Phelps deserves all the attention. He has done more for our sport than everyone else combined. What swimmer from today will be remembered more than Phelps in 30 years? (no one) The general public does not care about Dwyer of Grevers. So why should the general media focus on it? Besides for Bobo, I consider myself the biggest swim nerd out there. My comments may not be popular, but it is what it is.

PS-Matt Grevers is my favorite swimmer. I am not throwing shade!

I think you meant what non-swimmer today, because there will be plenty of swimmers who will remember most if not all of the NT from today.

I also believe you forgot Missy Franklin. Only pretty sure she has the pull for people to remember her by, especially if she continues her success from London.

In general, I’m sympathetic to the fact that Michael Phelps basically steals the spotlight from many other talented swimmers. But at the end of the day, he is still far and away the most consistently high performing male swimmer on the scene. If someone wants the spotlight, start beating him (and winning Olympic golds).

there a good amount of world class swimmers at this meet including lochte, ledecky, hoszu, grevers, beisel, manuel, clary, dwyer to name a few. of course only lochte and ledecky have some name recognition among the non fans, but none nearly as much as MP.

He’s earned the spotlight and one would expect a few stories about him considering it’s his return from suspension. The Grand Prix meets don’t sell out unless he shows up and there’s no question he’s far and away the most popular swimmer in the sport. Those who get bent out of shape about his coverage will have to live with it.

Apparently MP just gave a press conference that was livestream on the usaswimming website! I caught the last few minutes of it by accident, but I wish I had some way of knowing what time it started. I assumed they were going to have one (like they did last year) and I have been searching for info about it all day. When I couldn’t find any I just kept going to the page where they have the livestream for Mesa and caught the last question, which was about his fiance. Ugh! So frustrating!

I’m sure MP and Aquasphere are loving the free advertising. Nice big MP logo on the cap: it’s unmistakable. Dollar bills.

As well as confirmation that he’s hoping to swim in Rio, which of course we all knew, but now it’s OFFICIAL!

Aren’t reporters supposed to know what they are talking about before reporting it? “World Famous Breastroke”… I can tell he put a lot of effort into that one
