USOC Meets Thursday To Select US Candidate City For The 2024 Olympic Games

Representatives from the USOC will be meeting Thursday, January 8th at the Denver International Airport to consider a U.S. bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The USOC made claims in early December that the odds are good for an American 2024 Olympic bid, and on the 16th of December, they told the Chicago Tribune there would be a candidate city. The USOC reported that if a candidate city is picked, an announcement will be made following the meeting, and a more in-depth press conference will be held the following day in the selected city.

Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. are the four finalists under consideration to be the American candidate city to host the 2024 Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee’s deadline for 2024 bid submissions is Sept. 15, 2015, with the Official 2024 Olympics host city to be determined in 2017.

“We are excited to announce our plans to put forth a bid for the 2024 Games and look forward to taking the next step of selecting from a group of four world-class cities to present a compelling and successful bid,” said USOC Chairman Larry Probst. “We’re grateful to the civic and political leaders in each of the four cities for the partnership that’s been demonstrated thus far, and confident that the deliberative process we’ve put in place is going to result in a strong U.S. bid that can truly serve the athletes and the Olympic and Paralympic movements.”

“All four cities have presented plans that are part of the long-term visions for their communities,” said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun. “At our request, and because of the preliminary nature of our discussions, the cities have not spoken about their bids publicly in great detail. That will be an important part of the process after we make our selection in January.”

I’m from Boston, and I would LOVE to see the Olympics come here; however, I have trouble believing it’s possible. The pricetag of 4.5 billion which all 4 bids is using does not seem realistic – maybe twice that amout? There would need to be a LOT of corporate sponsorship and a lot of (unprecedented) cooperation from local universities, but the infrastructure necessary seems to be most problemmatic. Boston has a serviceable subway system, but it’s old (I believe the oldest in the US) and slow and always having trouble keeping up with demand, not to mention the fact that it’s already in huge debt. I can not picture that kind of crowd waiting on one of the “T” platforms,… Read more »
