USA Swimming Loosens Standards for Minneapolis Grand Prix

USA Swimming sent an email on Tuesday afternoon to all coaches with swimmers entered into the 2014 Minneapolis Grand Prix: the first meet of the 2014-2015 season.

Standards were originally announced as being equal to the Winter Junior Nationals time standards, and while the Winter Junior time standards have not changed, USA Swimming will be using a slower set specifically for this first Grand Prix. The new standards are significantly slower. A few examples:

  • the women’s 50 free standard is half-a-second slower in yards course and six-tenths slower in meters course.
  • the men’s 100 fly standard is a full second slower in yards course and 1.2 seconds slower in meters course.
  • The women’s 500 free standards are roughly 6 seconds slower.

Where swimmers had bonus entries that will now become regular entries, the entries have automatically been adjusted, according to the email, which will impact seeding.

See the up-to-date meet information with the new time standards here. The meet entry deadline is Monday, November 10th, and the meet will be held from November 20th-22nd at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
