Maureen Mead, the head diving coach at NCAA Division I Towson University, has been charged with 1 felony and 2 misdemeanors in Baltimore County Circuit Court. Mead was the head coach at the beginning of the season, though her employment status has not been clarified by university officials.

According to court records, Mead has been charged with one count of Interception of Communication, one count of Peeping Tom, and one count of Altering Physical Evidence related to a crime.

Mead was indicted on Monday on the three counts stemming from an alleged incident where a cell phone was found recording inside of the varsity swim team’s locker room.

Mead is married to head swim coach Pat Mead, who is also on leave.

The charges are all dated October 16th, after which time Maureen Mead was put on an administrative leave. The university has declined to make specific comment on the allegations since they were revealed by the Baltimore Sun last month. Last week, however, all three of Towson’s coaches were removed from their public roster and replaced by acting head coach Jake Shrum and acting diving coach Tim Perkins.

The university did not specifically comment on any of the three coaches (including assistant Adrienne Phillips),  and all three have since been removed from Towson’s Athletics Directory as well.

Relevant Statute for Felony Charge:

The charge specifically deals with interception of communications, regardless of their content; in other words, the felony charge specifically involves the allegations of illegally recording the swimmers, without regard specifically to the context of a locker room.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of imprisonment for not more than 5 years or a fine of not more than $ 10,000, or both.

Mead also received a traffic citation on October 14th, two days before the alleged incident, for driving 48 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.

I’ve known Maureen to be nothing but upstanding and professional. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her children.

Still? You respect people who plant a smart phone to spy on their athletes in the locker room in order to better manipulate them? And that’s giving pat the benefit of the doubt that it wasn’t also for perverted reasons. I, for one, would never respect people who would think nothing of doing that to my daughter. I don’t care how many accolades you have. My daughters respect and dig it come first. It’s called priorities.

I’m a graduate of Towson University. My daughter swam for Pat and dove for Maureen locally. We respect and support the entire Mead family!

Best wishes to the Towson team, here’s hoping they keep their season on track and can put this behind them as quickly as possible. Fast swims to all.

This is very sad and I can only think about her children. I don’t believe she allegedly did what is being reported. I’m praying for her and her family that this all works out for the best. Again , I find it hard to believe that Maureen allegedly did this.

Well. She did record herself actually putting the smart phone in the locker room when she pressed “record” soo…kind of hard to argue.
