Three Records Fall On Day Three Of Mexican Nationals

Day three of the Mexican Swimming Nationals saw 11 more swimmers qualify to swim at the 2015 Pan Am Games this summer in Toronto, adding to the seven who already made it in the last two days of competition.

Natalia Jaspead, who set a new Mexican national age-group record in the 1500m freestyle on night one, earned herself a spot on the team with a 400m freestyle victory. Jaspead was a 4:15.42 at the wall. Behind her was Ayumi Macias who also secured a spot on the team with a 4:15.72.

In the men’s 400m freestyle three swimmers were able to dip under the Pan Am Games qualifying time as Ricardo Jacabo, Arturo Ferrer , and Julio Alejos all broke 4-minutes.

Jacabo, 17, was the winner in 3:54.34 narrowly taking down Ferrer who rocked a 3:55.03. Alejos was third in 3:57.29. Both Jacabo and Ferrer will be representing Mexico at the Pan Am Games.

Maria Ramirez won the 200m backstroke in 2:14.92, breaking the qualifying time of 2:20.19. Also under it was Estela Ortiz with a 2:17.58. Lourdes Reyes finished third overall in 2:18.15.

Two more men grabbed roster spots was Ezequiel Aviles won the 200m backstroke in 2:03.48 ahead of Andy Xianyang’s 2:04.54.

The only women’s record of the night went to Ana Fonesca as she broke the women’s 17-18 record in the 100m fly with a time of 1:01.41. That broke her own record of 1:01.84.

That time grabbed Fonesca a second place finish in the championship final and a birth on the Pan Am team. The only swimmer faster than her was Diana Luna Sanchez in 1:00.94.

Two men’s records fell as Guillermo Zuniga finished first in the boys 13-14 100m fly with a 56.90. That time broke Victor Yavver’s 2011 record of 57.32.

The second record went to Mateo Gonzalez Medina who rocked a 54.28 in the championship final. He finished second, just shy of the Pan Am Games qualifying time. Winner Long Yuan Miguel Gutierrez Feng was under the time however, and grabbed a roster spot with a 53.92.
