SwimSwam Film Fest: Bodysurfing Ho’okipa

I’m a swim film festival fan, and I love this short film, this swimming video, Bodysurfing Ho’okipa, captured by Mike Donohoe.

I am always on the lookout for great swim videos. If you have an interesting, funny or beautiful swimming-related video and/or animated short,  please submit to Gold Medal Mel Stewart at swimswam to be featured. We appreciate all points of view on pools, lakes, rivers and oceans. Please include a little background on why you captured the video and the equipment you used (cameras, lens, editing software, etc.). Feel free to add your own story as well, 175 to 200 words works best.

From the filmmaker / producer Mike  Donohoe:

GMM, I wanted to share an edit I just finished called Bodysurfing Ho’okipa. If you’ve been to Maui you may know Ho’okipa surf break. There aren’t too many regular body surfers there. Mostly just the four from this video. It’s one of my favorite places to swim. Since retiring from swimming in 2007, I have struggled to get back into competitive swimming. Body surfing has replaced racing as my favorite in water activity.

Music: Olentangy John – Daniel
Shot on GoPro Hero 3
Cut in Adobe Premiere
Colored in Davinci Resolve

Aloha Mel,

I was the Producer and one of the Bodysurfers in this 13 episode, Season One, TV Series filmed in Brasil, California, Oahu, and Maui that began airing in January and continues with regular repeats. http://canaloff.globo.com/programas/homem-peixe/videos/

I connected with Mike Donohoe on Maui last Fall and we filmed us bodysurfing and handboarding with other Maui locals (Kaliya Mayell, Don Pepe and Joanne Sheng) at Windmills (Maui Pipeline) and Ho’okipa.

Mahalo Nui,

Aquaman
