Stefano Morini was honored this past weekend at the Italian Swimming Federation’s national conference by being named the first recipient of the Alberto Castagnetti Coach of the Year Award.

The 58-year old from Livorno has had his hand in the careers of many of Italy’s greats, and in the last year his swimmers have continued to lead the way. He is the coach of Gabrielle Detti and Gregorio Paltrinieri, the country’s two best distance swimmers. Paltrinieri won the European titles this summer in both the 800 and 1500 freestyles, while Detti earned silver in each. Detti earlier in the year set the European Record in the 800 free, and Paltrinieri’s 1500 from finals is the European Record in that event as well.

Morini will formally receive his award at a reception at the Italian Winter Championships in December.
