Rutgers Senior Joanna Wu Named Big Ten Women’s Swimmer of the Week

The Big Ten conference has announced its weekly honorees, with Joanna Wu earning swimmer of the week. Wu, a senior at Rutgers, swept the backstroke events as Rutgers took the team title at the FGCU Classic last week. The freshman honoree this week was Penn State’s Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo. She won the 200 breast in a tri-meet that saw Penn State top Georgia Tech and Liberty.

Collecting diving honors this week was Minnesota’s Yu Zhou. She picked up a win in the 1-meter event to help Minnesota claim victory over Florida State. This was the first time Minnesota has matched up in a dual meet with FSU in program history.

Swimmer of the Week
Joanna Wu, Rutgers

Sr. – Kent, Wash. – Kent-Meridian

  • Claimed a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke events at the Florida Gulf Coast University Classic
  • Recorded a time of 54.94 seconds in the 100 backstroke and 1:58.71 in the 200 backstroke
  • Collected NCAA provisional qualifying times in both events
  • The 2014-15 Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns her first career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award
  • Marks the first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor for Rutgers

 

Diver of the Week

Yu Zhou, Minnesota

Jr. – Wuhan, China – Beijing College of Sports

  • Finished first in the one-meter event (325.65) and second in the three-meter event (306.75) in Minnesota’s dual meet win over Florida State
  • Recorded NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Earns her fourth career Diver of the Week honor
  • Last Minnesota Diver of the Week: Yu Zhou (Feb. 10, 2015)

 

Freshman of the Week
Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo, Penn State

Fr. – Mexico City, Mexico – German School Alexander von Humboldt

  • Collected two first-place finishes and added two third-place touches in Penn State’s wins over Georgia Tech and Liberty
  • Finished third in the 200 freestyle against Georgia Tech with a time of 1:52.15
  • Touched first in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.37) and 400 individual medley exhibition event (4:19.10), and added a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:47.11) versus Liberty
  • Time in the 400 individual medley is an NCAA provisional qualifying time
  • Earns her first Freshman of the Week award
  • Earns the first Freshman of the Week honor for Penn State
