Senior Katie Smith anchored both teams with big splits. She was 22.44 on the end of the 200 free relay and 50.23 on the 400 free relay, both the fastest splits in the field. She was joined on both squads by Becca Evans, Emma Corby and Lindsay Stone.

In the 200 free relay, the sophomore Evans led off in 23.74 as the team went 1:33.77 to break their own state record from earlier in the year. The 400 saw Stone lead off in 51.49 to key a 3:25.24 swim to break another state mark.

And Smith got a state record of her own individually, going 22.72 in prelims of the 50 free. She would go 22.77 to take the win in the final. Smith is committed to swim for Notre Dame next season.

Stone won the 500 free for Pittsford as well, going 4:48.08 to rattle the state record. Stone, a junior, sits just over a second off the mark with one year of high school to go.

Long Beach juniors Margaret Aroesty and Kristen Romano each won a pair of events to help power a third-place finish for their team.

Aroesty broke the state record in the 100 breaststroke, hitting the minute barrier right on the nose with a 1:00.00. That’ll make her one of the top high school breaststrokers in her class, especially if she can crack the barrier next season. Aroesty also went 1:58.45 to take the 200 IM, missing a state record by two tenths.

Romano took the 100 fly (54.76) and 100 back (54.28), coming within half a second of the state record in both races.

Romano and Aroesty made up the front half of Long Beach’s state championship 200 medley relay as well, splitting 25.97 and 27.86, respectively, to team with Morgan Harrington and Joan Cash and go 1:44.63 – a new state record.

One more state record fell in the 200 free, to Massapequa’s Cara Treble. the senior was 1:48.01 with Pittsford’s Stone going 1:48.29 to also get under the old record.

Other individual winners included Newark junior Alexandra House in diving (509.40 points) and Pelham freshman Katherine Douglass in the 100 free (50.32), who beat state champs Treble and Smith for that title to help her team take second overall.

Top 5 Teams:

  1. Pittsford – 323.5
  2. Pelham – 195
  3. Long Beach – 193
  4. Orchard Park – 183
  5. Ursuline – 131

Thanks for the coverage Swim Swam. It was a fast meet with some great races. Congratulations to Long Beach High School. When was the last time one school had two double winners at states? Way to go Aroesty and Romano!
