Pellegrini Wins 200 Free on Day 4 of Italian Sprint Nationals

While Italian swimmer Federica Pellegrini has given up the 400 free in favor of the backstrokes, for now at least, but she’s still got something to show in the 200 freestyle.

On day four of the 2013 Italian Spring National Championships, Pellegrini won her third event of the meet in the 200, swimming a 1:56.51. Alice Mizzau took 2nd in 1:58.67, which is just shy of the time required by the federation to swim at the World Championships.

The second-to-last night of the meet was full of great swims just like that one. In the men’s 50 free, Marco Orsi won in 21.98. He and Luca Dotto (22.03) both cleared the FINA Automatic Qualifying time, but Dotto was .03 seconds away from Italy’s declared standard. Given that he’ll be at the meet anyway for relays, there will hopefully be some leeway given.

Federico Bocchia was 3rd in 22.29.

In the men’s 1500 free, Gregorio Paltrinieri had a good, but not great, swim to win in 14:55.10. After the swims that he’s put up at this meet, that’s maybe a bit slower than expected, but that also shows that he’s still got room to go at Barcelona.

His peer Gabrielle Detti was 2nd in 14:58.78, including a very good closing kick. Both swimmers will make the team for the World Championships.
