Oakton Freshman Megan Byrnes Talks About Excitement of Winning Two Regional Records

Another member of the dominant Oakton girls’ team, while Janet Hu is the present Megan Byrnes is the future in Northern Virginia. She won both the 200 (1:50.24) and 500 (4:50.43) freestyles, both in new regional records. Byrnes is the latest in a line of young phenom distance freestylers from the great D.C. area that includes names like Olympic Champion Katie Ledecky and World Record holder Kate Ziegler. What’s scary is that the 200 was a best time by a second, but she’s been a 4:45 in the 500. Taper is ticking.

Matt Rees spoke with Byrnes about the excitement of her first high school championship meet.
