The Notre Dame men and women, programs coached and administered separately, have announced their 2013-2014 schedules for their initial season in the ACC. As we discussed when Pitt announced their schedule, Notre Dame will be their first in-conference ACC opponent, and the reverse holds true as well.
This will be the Irish’s beginning in the ACC, though note that the men were last year’s Big East Champions, and the women were 2nd (though they outscored champions Louisville with a 16th-place finish at NCAA’s).
Men’s Rundown (Keep Scrolling If You’re Looking for the Women’s Rundown)
The champion men will begin their season with the Dennis Stark Relays for the 49th time, with confirmed teams including Auburn, Michigan (men only), Cleveland State, Oakland, and Valparaiso.
This year, the men will play host to Auburn and Michigan in a tri-meet on Saturday, October 12th in a competition of three teams that have won at least one major conference championship in the last two seasons.
Two weeks later, on October 25th, the team will pack up and head west for a one-off dual against the U.S. Air Force Academy, then return home to face in-state rivals Purdue on the road on November 1st.
A tri meet against Pitt and Virginia Tech in Pittsburgh will open the team’s new chapter in the ACC, and then they’ll return home the next weekend to host more traditional foes Michigan State and Wisconsin on November 15th and 16th. Those will be the only ACC teams they’ll face at in-season meets in year one.
The Irish’s mid-season invite this year will be the Iowa-hosted Hawkeye Invitational from December 6th-8th before they retire for warmer training weather in Puerto Rico. Fulfilling the requirement of competition while on that trip, the team will participate at the Copa Coqui Meet in Trujillo Alto on January 4th and 5th.
After competing, the Irish will hurry home to jam in a few more meets before championship season. That includes on the road against Northwestern, and then on the road against their old Big East foes from Louisville in what has become a pretty strong swimming rivalry.
They’ll host a two-day AShamrock Invitational at the end of January, and will see Cleveland State for a second time to close the regular season on February 8th.
The team then heads to the ACC Diving Championships (all diving will be done with women’s swimming from February 19th-22nd) and the ACC Swimming Championships (February 26th-March 1st), both in Greensboro, North Carolina. Notre Dame always has a strong diving program, and they’ll compete at the Zone Qualifier in Columbus, before hopefully forwarding a team on to the NCAA Championships in Austin from March 27th-29th.
