NC State Swimming & Diving Primed to Begin 2013-14 Season at All-NC Invitational

The NC State swimming & diving team will open its season Friday, Oct. 4, by hosting the All-North Carolina Invitational in Greensboro, N.C., at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The two-day event is slated to begin Friday at 5:30 p.m., andSaturday at 10 a.m.

“We are expecting to get the season started with some energy and to get the ball rolling with competitions,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “We have been training for a little while and its early in the season, but we want to start the learning process. They’re all going to have some races and start to understand the areas we need to address in each race and each event.”

A total of 13 teams will be competing in the Invitational, along with the Wolfpack, including Campbell, Catawba, Davidson, Duke, East Carolina, Gardner Webb, Greensboro College, North Carolina A&T, Pfeiffer, Queens University of Charlotte, UNC-Asheville, St. Andrews College and Wingate.

“The first year was fun; it was different,” Holloway stated. “The way we format it creates the ability for schools that normally never swim against each other to see each other in a great environment at Greensboro.”

Last season, the men’s and women’s teams finished first at the inaugural All-North Carolina Invitational.

Holloway enters his third season at the helm of the program, after the men’s squad finished the 2012-13 season with a 5-4-1 record and the women with a 7-4 mark. The men’s squad capped the season with a top-15 finish at the NCAA Championships, the program’s highest finish since the 1978-79 campaign and the best among participating ACC schools. The men’s squad returns 19 athletes this season, including 2013 All-Americans Simonas Bilis, Ian Bishop, Jonathan Boffa, Michael Camper, Barrett Miesfeld, Matt Thomas and David Williams. On the women’s side, the squad returns 19 athletes, including All-ACC performers Hannah Freyman, Riki Bonnema and Zina Grogg.

Admission for the event is free, but parking at the Greensboro Aquatic Center will be $5 per day.
