Michael Andrew Re-Breaks National Age Group Record in 100 Yard Fly

14-year old professional swimmer Michael Andrew has rebroken his own National Age Group Record in the 100 yard fly. In prelims of the event on Friday at the 2013 Winter Junior National Championships, he swam a 48.40 to take the #4 seed headed into finals. That improves upon the 48.78 that he did at the Minneapolis Grand Prix.

The old record, before Andrew started breaking it, was a 48.98 that Andrew had been earlier in 2013, as had Michael Domagala in 2010.

  • Old Record: 22.60 – 26.18 = 48.78
  • New Record: 22.63 – 25.77 = 48.40

This change fits with what we know about Andrew’s training. He trains only at race pace, and so usually the first 50 will come down first in his races, and then we’ll see an improvement in the second 50. He also has a relatively low spread in his 100 yard races.

This swim is a bounce-back after a bit of a subpar Winter Nationals meet. He was dealing with some family health issues at that time (he was very public about that on his social media), so perhaps there was a bit of a distraction in Knoxville. It appears as though he’s back on track in Greensboro.
