McEvoy Setting the Stage to Excel in Kazan

Heading into the Canberra Grand Prix, which begins tomorrow, 21 year old Cameron McEvoy expressed his confidence in what he can accomplish at the World Championships in Kazan.

“I have swum plenty of 47s , so I am confident I can hit that pretty consistently when I’m rested,’’ McEvoy told the Australian.

Last summer McEvoy took gold in the 100 freestyle at the Pan Pacific Championships finishing in a time of 47.82. In doing so he finished half a second ahead of Olympic champion Nathan Adrian as well as fellow Australian and Olympic silver medalist James Magnussen.

“It’s kind of pointless to be doing that before the world titles. I would get confidence from it, but I would rather have more depth in my training block to help me out,” said McEvoy.

“Training has been going really well since the trials. I’ve been doing some great times.’’

McEvoy won the 100 freestyle at the Australian trials in a time of 48.06, which currently has him sitting second in the world rankings with only Vlad Morozov having swum faster.

As for the competition in Canberra McEvoy is just looking forward to racing top level competition once again, “It will be racing in very heavy training again, much like the NSW titles (where Magnussen won and both men clocked 49 seconds),’’ he said.

McEvoy competed at the London Olympics as an 18 year old leading off the men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay team in the prelims. He then went on to compete at the World Championships in Barcelona finishing fourth in the 100 freestyle.
