Loughborough Captures Team Title at BUCS

When the British Universities and Colleges Sport Short Course Swimming Championships were complete it was not a surprise to anyone that Loughborough University once again sat on top of the points standings. Loughborough took the team title accumulating 338 points, making it 11 years since another team has taken the title. The University of Bath finished second with 277 points while the University of Edinburgh finished third with 253 points.

Adam Barrett and Ben Proud, who will both be representing Great Britain at the World Short Course Championships, each took events during the three day competition.

Barrett helped Loughborough accumulate many of their points by winning both the 50 and 100 butterfly as well as finishing second in the 200 freestyle. He took the 50 butterfly in a time of 23.41, the 100 butterfly in a time of 52.18 and finished second to Ieuan Lloyd  in the 200 freestyle posting a time of 1:45.92.

Proud, who represents the University of St. Mark & St. John won the 50 freestyle by over half a second recording a time of 21.62. He also finished second to Barrett in the 50 butterfly touching in a time of 23.52.

Cardiff Metropolitan’s Ieuan Lloyd won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:45.25 as well as the 200 IM posting a time of 1:55.41, finishing over five seconds ahead of the next competitor. His time also places him 15th in the world rankings.

Three other Loughborough swimmers took multiple events at the championships. Joe Elwood swept the men’s backstroke events posting a 25.16 in the 50, a 53.17 in the 100 and a 1:58.22 in the 200.

Emma Wilkins took the women’s 50 freestyle posting a time of 24.86 and followed that up by winning the 100 freestyle recording a time of 54.32.

Richard Spoor just missed completing a sweep of the men’s breaststroke events. He won the 50 in a time of 27.17, tied Martin Schweizer for the win in the 100 posting a 59.89, but finished 16 one-hundredths of a second behind teammate Laurent Carnol who took the 200 in a time of 2:08.61.
