Lake Country Phoenix Names Mark Johnson as New Senior Coach

Mark Johnson has been selected as a new Senior Coach for the Lake Country Phoenix Swim Team in Hartland, WI.  Mark will be the lead coach for most of the program’s 13-14 year old swimmers as the lead coach for the program’s Senior Silver and Senior Bronze practice groups.

Johnson will also be assisting Head Senior Coach Dave Joyce with the National Team and in the Senior Sterling and Senior Gold groups.

Mark returns to Lake Country where he was a standout swimmer for 12 years and is reunited with his developmental, coach Dave Joyce. His swimming experience is vast, having competed in two Olympic trials (2004 and 2008), having been a member of the 2003 National Junior Team and having competed as a collegiate All-American for Auburn University.

Mark was a part of four consecutive national championship teams while at Auburn.  Mark earned his degree at Auburn and has since been coaching and instructing at various clubs in Illinois and Alabama.

Coach Joyce had this to say about the recent hire: “I coached Mark from 2001-2004, during my first stint with the Phoenix. He was a big part of our Speedo Sectionals Team Title in 2003. In addition, he was also the first swimmer coached by me to achieve a USA Senior Nationals time standard and to be selected for the USA Junior Team. Following his time here at LAKE, Mark became an Auburn Tiger and had the opportunity to gain valuable experience working with legendary coaches, David Marsh & Dave Durden.  We are very excited for his homecoming.  He will undoubtedly bring a lot of energy and new perspectives to our program while coming in with a firsthand understanding of our team’s culture of commitment and rich tradition of success.”

Mark succeeds Coach Tom Coons in his role with the Phoenix after Coons recently completed a homecoming of his own by returning to his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky to join the staff at his childhood club, the Lakeside Seahawks.
