Indiana’s Matthews, Schroeder Earn ACWPC All-America Honorable Mention Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –Freshman Kelly Matthews and junior Candyce Schroeder received honorable mention All-American honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, the ACWPC announced Friday morning. Matthews and Schroeder become the eighth and ninth Hoosiers in program history to receive All-American honors from the ACWPC.

Kelly Matthews (2014- ) opened her Indiana career in resounding fashion during the Hoosiers’ 2015 campaign. Matthews led all Hoosiers in scoring with 73 goals, more than any freshman in IU history and the sixth-highest single-season total in school history.

That goal total had much to do with her tendency to get into a scoring rhythm, as she scored three or more goals in 14 of Indiana’s 35 matches in 2015. Matthews also totaled 25 assists, 24 steals, and 11 field blocks in her debut season. Matthews’ accolades from her freshman year are many, including winning the CWPA Rookie of the Year, CWPA Tournament Rookie of the Year, an All-CWPA Second Team selection, an All-CWPA Tournament First Team selection, and three CWPA Rookie of the Week selections.

Candyce Schroeder (2013- ) has been a primary offensive target for the Hoosiers since her freshman season in 2013. This season, Schroeder scored 56 goals and served 27 assists for the Hoosiers this season, and scored three or more goals in nine matches. Her biggest contribution to Indiana’s offensive success was her ability to gain power play advantage, as she led the team with 64 drawn ejections.

Schroeder’s season accolades include first team All-CWPA Tournament honors, a second team All-CWPA selection, a CWPA Player of the Week award on February 2, and Academic All-Big Ten honors. Schroeder (108 career goals, 52 career assists) will be the top-returning scorer for the Hoosiers in the 2016 season.

This marks the fourth time in school history that two IU Water Polo players received All-American honors from the ACWPC in the same season. Matthews and Schroeder join the 2003 honorees (Kristin Stanford, Krista Peterson); the 2011 honorees (Jakie Köhli, Cassie Wyckoff); and the 2012 honorees (Shae Fournier, Cassie Wyckoff) as Indiana’s dual All-America selections.
