Indiana Women Out Swim Louisville To Win On Senior Night

Last night, the Indiana Hoosiers hosted their rivals from below the Ohio River, the Louisville Cardinals, for a women’s only senior night dual meet. The men’s team from Evansville was also there, racing the split-squad Indiana Men’s team that didn’t travel to Columbus for the men’s tri-dual. Ohio State is hosting the men from Lousiville and Indiana for the men’s only tri-dual this afternoon.

Kelsi Worrell and Andrea Cottrell lead the cardinals to their first victory of the night with a 22.9 50 butterfly split and a 28.2 50 breaststroke split in the 200 medley relay. She was joined by Tanja Kylliainen, Andrea Cottrell, and Andrea Kneppers for a combined 1:40.08 to win the relay. Indiana finished second at 1:43.64.

A runner-up finish in the first event didn’t phase Indiana, though. Stephanie Marchuk led a 1-2-3 charge for the Hoosiers, sweeping the 1000 freestyle with her time of 10:00.49. The 200 freestyle and 100 backstrokes looked the same way for Indiana. Haley Lips, Kennedy Goss, and Grace Vertigans all dipped under the 1:50 barrier to sweep the 200 freestyle while NCAA Champion Brooklyn Snodgrass (53.44) led Justine Ress, Marie Chamberlain, and Allie Day to a 1-2-3-4 finish in the backstroke.

The Cardinals bounced back with a 1-2-3 sweep of their own in the 100 breaststroke. Andrea Cottrell led the way with a 1:02.30, followed by Margaret Patterson in second and Lucy Kramer in third.

U of L’s Tanja Kylliainen threw down a strong 1:56.21 to win the 200 fly. Indiana’s Reagan Cook was the only other swimmer under two minutes. She finished second at 1:59.46.

Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell sprinted to her first individual win of the meet, posting a time of 22.69. Brooklyn Snodgrass finished second with her time of 22.31. Following the break, Worrell came back to win the 100 freestyle in 49.07. Indiana’s Grace Vertigans was second at 51.03.

Indiana’s Brooklyn Snodgrass added her second individual win of the day with a 1:54.10 in the 200 backstroke. Kennedy Goss was also able to dip under 2:00 for second with her time of 1:58.87.

Andrea Cottrell added a second breaststroke victory with her time of 2:16.41 in the 200 breaststroke, leading a 1-2-3 sweep.

Indiana’s depth continued to drive a wedge between the two teams. Haley Lips led a 1-2-3 assault in the 500 freestyle at 4:52.88. Goss was second at 4:54.69 and Marchuk was third at 4:55.34.

Tanja Kylliainen went 53.50 to earn first place points for the Cardinals in the 100 butterfly. Indiana’s Olivia Barker was second at 55.26. After a quick turn-around, Kylliainen went 4:11.05 to win the 400 IM ahead of Sam Lisy from Indiana at 4:19.42.

Indiana touched out Louisville to take the final event of the day with a final time of 3:21.98. Louisville finished second at 3:22.24 despite a 48.48 split from Kelsi Worrell.

The Indiana women defended their home pool on senior night to win the meet with a score of 170 to Louisville’s 130. To view the full meet results, click here.
