Gold Coast Bound: The United States’ 2014 Pan Pacific Championship Team Roster

The 2014 US Pan Pacific Championship team will feature the maximum 30 swimmers, with 26 in the pool and 4 in open water, after the conclusion of the 2014 U.S. National Championships. Swimmers like Jordan Willimovsky, who qualified in open water, can swim in the pool as well, even though he’s only listed in the 10k, according to USA Swimming staff.

Listing Willimovsky, who was qualified in the pool based on his 3rd-place finish in the 1500, as just in the 10k, allowed USA Swimming one last pool spot, and that pool spot shockingly went to a 4th-place finisher. Among those who got in on their 4th rung of the ladder were David Plummer, Matt Ellis in the 100 fly, and Jacob Pebley in the 200 back. On the basis of his World Ranking, Plummer was pulled onto the Pan Pacs roster despite being 4th in the 100 backstroke. His prelims swim of 53.12 was second-best among Americans at Nationals, and ranks him tied for 5th in the world this year according to the official FINA rankings.

Ellis ranks 7th in the world in the 100 fly with his 51.73 from finals, and Pebley is now 13th in the world in the 200 back with a 1:56.58.

He’s one of

Remember that once swimmers are named to this team, they can, in agreement with coaches, expand their schedules.

J Burns and Litherland age up before the meet.

we can speculate all we want about who will swim what in australia but very few from the rest have the ability to beat the top two times from the nationals. i think the intriguing questions are of course centered around lochte and phelps. do they try to swim too many events which at this point in their career i dont think they can do as easily. do they risk dropping some events they think they are almost certain on the worlds team to make it on the relays ?
lochte for example could swim the 200 free on day one, 100 free and possibly 4 x 2 free on day two, 200 im on day four. on day… Read more »

No way Phelps will swim 200 free when he even stopped swimming it in London.
Phelps will definitely swim the events which he plans to swim in Rio: 100 fly and 200 IM. And the relays. Any other events such as individual 100 free or 100 back is just sprint practice.

Bobo, I believe YOG swimmers can’t swim at Jr Pan Pacs.

If you want to give me a list of those girls, and any 18 & unders on the Senior PanPacs team, I’ll trying combing through the results today, and after eliminating those swimmers, see what the Junior team will look like. Guys were a lot easier than girls because no 18&U made the team. Heck, very few made finals.

They can’t.

But they could have been. 😡

Don’t worry about the girls. The roster will be annonced on or before Wednesday. I can wait. I just wanted to know if Amy Bilquist and Madison Homovich were in that roster. I hope so. They deserve it.

Is it possible that they can go to pan pacs and not make the national team?

Okay, for Junior Pan Pacs, if I’m reading selection criteria correctly, times from both prelims and finals count for selection. 20 of each gender. Priority #1 is top two in the 100/200 free, and top time in the other Olympic events. Priority #2 is second fastest in the rest of the Olympic events. Priority #3 is third fastest time. Tie-breaker between different events will be world rank. For the men, it looks like 19 swimmers qualify through priorities #1 and #2, and Carter Griffen will be the only swimmer selected under priority #3, on the basis of being ranked 39th in the world in the 200 back. Here’s what I think the men’s roster will look like:

1. Andrew, Michael… Read more »

Good job The troublewithx!
Hats off! 🙂
Great group of guys. And cool to see Mr Andrew in his first US team for his first international meet.
I’m interested to see if some swimmers who have shined at Juniors the week before have swum faster times than some of those who are qualified because they have swum their times at the qualification meet. You haven’t understood anything? Normal. 🙂 Sorry for that very long sentence but I’m a little tired. I just wanted to say that it would be bad to see the best junior or one of the best in an event not go to Pan Pacs. But the rules are the rules. The qualifying meet… Read more »

And girls like Meghan Small or Clara Smiddy who swim at the youth olympic games? They can also swim at junior pan pacs? The meet is held the week after. And China is not so far from Hawaii. 🙂

Impressive! I tried to follow along like this with both the Senior and Junior Pan Pac teams while Nationals was going on but fell off by the end. Kudos!
