Goeij Breaks Championship Record at the Brazilian Youth Champships

The Brazilian Youth Championships also known as the Arthur Sampaio Carepa Trophy kicked off yesterday in Recife. The championships are separated into two youth categories, Youth I and Youth II. Youth I are athletes born in 2000 whereas Youth II are athletes born in 1999.

Fernanda Goeij had the swim of the day breaking the championship record in the 100 backstroke in the girls’ Youth I category posting a time of 1:04..71. She broke the record of 1:04.90 set by Beatriz Silva Lima at last year’s championships.

Lima, who represents the Corinthians, took the Youth II 100 backstroke in a time of 1:05.90, well off her personal best which she put up at this meet last year.

John Victor Pena looked to break the championship record of 58.50 in the boys’ Youth I category which is held by Andre Augusto Santos. Pena just missed the record finishing in a time of 58.66. Although he did not break the record he finished almost a full second ahead of the next competitor.

Leonardo Chaves took the boys’ Youth II event recording a time of 59.80. It was the first time Chaves had broken a minute and he was the only in the field to accomplish that feat.

Majda Chebaraka won the girls’ Youth I 800 freestyle in a time of 9:01.05 while Leticia Rodrigues took the Youth II in 9:06.42.

Rafaela Raurich who will be competing at the World Junior Championships was in the Youth I final, but since she is in the middle of her preparation for the World Juniors she was well off the pace.

Izaac Paula Junior dropped 16 seconds off his lifetime best to take the boys’ Youth I 1500 freestyle in a time of 16:30.87 while Windson Pionorio Filho won the Youth II posting a 16:33.46.

Minas took the girls’ 4 x 100 freestyle relay in a time of 3:55.04.

In the boys’ the team from the Pinheiros set a new championship record posting a time of 3:30.29. The beat the pervious record of 3:30.87 set by their fellow teammates in 2013.

The Pinheiros lead the overall points standings with a total of 72 points, but they are only two points ahead of the Corinthians who collected 70 points on the first day of competition.
