George Washington Sweeps Howard on Homecoming Weekend

GWU Women’s Release

WASHINGTON- The George Washington women’s swimming and diving team finished first in each of Friday’s 11 events at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool to earn a victory over local foe Howard.

The Colonials amassed 92 points to the Bison’s 79 to clinch a victory in the first contest of Homecoming Weekend.

Senior Morgan Zebley paced GW, winning all three races in which she participated. Zebley won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 54.20 and teamed up with juniors Maggie Hofstadter and Lauren Steagall and sophomore Carly Whitmer to earn a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:52.76. Zebley finished the meet with a top performance in the 200- free relay alongside classmates Janica LeeBrittany Liedholm and Bianca Valencia in 1:43.46.

Whitmer and Lee each added a first and second place finish individually, with their winning performances coming in the 200- individual medley (2:15.18) and 200- free (1:58.14), respectively. Lee earned a runner-up finish in the 100- free (54.80), which Whitmer took second in the 500- free (5:22:07).

Freshman Hannah Kopydlowski finished first twice and second once in her individual efforts. Her winning performances came in the 50- free (24.83) and 100- backstroke (1:01.36), while she earned runner-up honors in the 100- backstroke (1:11.16).

Other top finishers included junior Madison Reinker in the 1000- free (10:43.50), Valencia in the 100- butterfly (58.53), freshman Abigail Fusco in the 500- free (5:16.36), and sophomore Lauren Law in the 100- breast (1:10.35).

The Colonials return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 31 to renew the #RevolutionaryRivalry and take on George Mason for a senior day celebration. Seniors Zebley, Lee, Liedholm and Valencia will be recognized prior to the 1 p.m.meet.

GWU Men’s Release

WASHINGTON- The George Washington men’s swimming and diving team swept the top spot in all 11 events on Friday and downed local rival Howard to open Homecoming Weekend.

The Colonials accumulated 86 points to outscore Howard’s 72 to solidify a victory in 2015’s first home meet.

Seniors Adam Rabe and Goran Koprivnjak and freshman Gustav Hokfelt led the Colonials, each with two first place finishes and a runner-up effort. Rabe’s victories came in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.28) and 100- breaststroke (59.66), while he finished second in the 200- medley relay alongside classmate Joe Lipworth, sophomore Ben Fitchand freshman Aneil Srivastava (1:39.54). Hokfelt finished first in the 100- butterfly (54.77) and 100- backstroke (53.76). His second-best performance came in the 200- IM (2:02.17). Koprivnjak won the 50- free (21.71), and joined forces with sophomore Bogdan Balteanu and freshman Jarvus Pennington and Adam Drury to finish first in the 200- free relay (1:30.53). Koprivnjak placed second in the 100- breast with a time of 1:00.42.

Other top finishers included sophomore Liam Huffman in the 500- and 1000- free in 4:42.29 and 9:51.13, respectively, freshman Connor Hart in the 200- free (1:46.67), and Fitch in the 100- free (48.78). The team of sophomore Ryan O’Malley, senior Oliver Keegan, Balteanu and Srivastava clinched the top spot in the 200- medley relay to round out the day’s best finishes.

The Colonials return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 31 to renew the #RevolutionaryRivalry and take on George Mason for a senior day celebration. Seniors Garrett Cottingham, Koprivnjak, Lipworth and Rabe will be recognized prior to the 1 p.m. meet.
