Duke Announces 16 Recruits From Early Signing Period

The Duke Blue Devils, rather late in the season, have announced 16 recruits signed in the fall season – a banner class that will stand as one of the program’s best in the last decade. The uptick in recruiting both as the latest in a multi-year run of solid recruiting success, and after an announcement in the 2013-2014 season that the program’s scholarship offerings would be increasing.

Among the highlights are Junior Pan Pacs medalist Lexy Aitchison on the women’s side, and a new find in Yusuke Legard from the UK, a previously unannounced addition.

See the full press release, detailing all 16 signees and their best times, below.

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University swimming and diving head coach Dan Colella and the Blue Devil coaching staff signed a standout group of 16 recruits during the fall 2014 commitment period. Duke will welcome six female and five male swimmers for the 2015-16 campaign. In addition, head diving coach Nunzio Esposto will add two female and three male divers to the program for the coming year.

“Every year it’s exciting to report back to our administration that we’ve had another successful recruiting cycle,” Colella said. “The program just continues to improve year-to-year here at Duke, and we don’t see that changing any time in the near future.”

Lexy Aitchison, Alyssa Arwood, Lizzie Fitzpatrick, Maddie Hess, Mickayla Hinkle, Susan Hynes, Brittany Kahn and Mackenzie Willborn will begin their collegiate careers with the Blue Devil women in 2015-16.

“All these young ladies are going to be major contributors individually, but also what this class will do for our relays is significant,” Colella said. “Not only is the swimming group deep and talented, but we also picked up two of the top diving recruits in the country. Coupled with the women we’ll have returning, we’re going to see some exciting things in the coming years. Another great thing about this class is the personality of all these young women. They’re all outgoing and very excited to be a part of a program that is on the rise.”

Lee Christensen, Riley Hickman, Judd Howard, Yusuke Legard, Evan Moretti, Josh Owsiany, Max St. George and Sean Tate will join the Duke men next season.

“We signed three high-caliber diving recruits on the men’s side, which was a priority this year,” Colella said. “Given our numbers, we were also able to be more focused on finding the right group of men for Duke, and I believe we were very successful in that area. They are coming in with times and scores that are extremely competitive in the ACC, and they have the potential to in their careers qualify for NCAAs. This group really fits the model of the student-athlete and chose Duke not only for what we’re doing in the pool, but equally as important, they’re coming here to get a great education.”

A lot of his diving style is mimicked after the Chinese, and that’s one of the things that drew me to him. He spins fast and the type of come-outs he was taught remind me of the Chinese divers. I think his potential is great. As he gets more strength, he will get better and better.”

He’s taken his training to another level. One of the areas we’re looking to add depth is in the backstroke, and Max really fits that bill well. He’s got a great swimming physique, and that definitely will be enhanced when we get him here in terms of strength and conditioning. Max is a great guy. He is one of the better sprinters out there in the country right now and has been having a terrific year. We feel he’ll benefit from what we’re doing in the area of strength and conditioning. He already has some really great sprint tools, and should be a factor on our sprint relays as a freshman.”

My son is a sophmore at Brooklyn Technical High Schoo in NYC. He is a competitive swimmer and he is trying for the swimm team this month. He is already swimming for Flyers at La GuardiA College. He is looking to apply at Duke and I wAs wondering if there is any summer camp or other ways to help him to be recruted for the swim team

Nice group of recruits, Duke program is headed upwards.

How well funded is the men’s team? I read some time ago that the women are now fully funded, which is great to hear.
