CMS Wins Double Dual; Williams Breaks School Record

Dec 9, 2013

CMS opened SCIAC action with double-dual meet wins over Chapman University and Whittier College on Saturday.

Freshman Matthew Williams led off the 400 medley relay by crushing the CMS varsity record in the 100 yard backstroke. Williams’ time of 49.86 topped Blake Weber’s mark of 50.59 set at February’s SCIAC Championships and is just .19 shy of the SCIAC record in the event. Williams’ “A” relay lead was extended by Anthony Ribal and Matt Valentine, with Alex Poltash anchoring. The Stags finished with a 1-2-3-4 relay sweep in the opening event.

The Stags extended their lead with a 1-2-3 finish in the 1650 yard freestyle. Juniors Alex Mendoza and Marc Blumberg swam stroke-for-stroke over the initial 700 yards before Mendoza pulled away from teammates Blumberg and John Seylar.

The 400 IM also finished in Mendoza’s favor, though four different Stags held leads during the race. Austin Melody flew to the early lead, but Cory Johnson stormed to a four second lead at the mid-way point. Tim Storer touched first after the breaststroke leg, but Mendoza shifted to a higher gear over the final 100 to pull away.

Conrad Shabb was a double winner, scoring victories in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events. Williams earned a second victory in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 1:50.54, placing him third on the CMS Top 10 list in the event. Williams’ 100 and 200 backstroke times are NCAA “B” cuts.

James Stevick joined divers Julian Laguisma and Jay Kabellis for sweeps of both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Stevick’s 1-meter score surpassed the NCAA Zone qualifying mark.

Other event winners for CMS were Blumberg in the 200 fly, Patrick Shultz in the 100 free, Ribal in the 200 breast and the 200 freestyle relay team ofCameron Whiting, Williams, Graham Spurzem and Shultz.

CMS will resume competition after exams and the holiday break with a SCIAC home meet versus the University of La Verne on January 11.
