Cate Campbell started off the fifth day of preliminaries at the EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships by posting a world’s best in the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.47.
Campbell’s splits – 25.58/27.89 (53.47)
Campbell’s season’s best was a 53.51, which she did at the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series and was tied with Camille Muffat for the fastest time done in the world this year. If she qualifies for Barcelona in the 100 freestyle final the world championships will be her first chance to compete on the world stage since having to pull out of the event at the Olympic Games due to illness.
She was followed by Swedish swimmer Michelle Coleman who posted a time of 54.26, which is under the FINA A time standard of 54.86.
Emma McKeon qualified second for the semi-final in a time of 54.47 with Alicia Coutts qualifying third in a time of 54.50.
In the men’s 200 backstroke Matson Lawson qualified first for the semi-final in a time of 1:58.33. The winner of the 100 backstroke Ashley Delany qualified second in a time of 2:00.54. Mitch Larkin, who swam the 200 backstroke in London, qualified third recording a time of 2:00.71.
18 year old Taylor McKeown, who posted a time of 2:25.90 at the Australian Age Group Championships, which is the fastest time swum by an Australian this year, qualified first in a time of 2:28.50.
She was followed by 16 year old Jenna Strauch who recorded a time of 2:29.73 and Sally Foster who finished in a time of 2:30.93.
In the men’s 200 breaststroke Buster Sykes qualified first in a time of 2:15.79 followed by Lennard Bremer who posted a time of 2:16.00 and Nicholas Schafer who recorded a time of 2:17.44.

And they have now with Cate Campbell the favorite for the women’s 100 free and with James Magnussen the co-favorite for the men’s 100 free.
Bobo.. for Campbell time.. I think we should wait to see Ramoni times… how fast she can be with actually someone to push her?
Nothing new. Australian girls are the big favorites for the gold in 4X100 free relay and Australian boys are co-favorites with French swimmers.
the plot thickens again…now the french have no one in the top 10 100 free while the aussies have 3.
the russians are still looking strong though. we’ll have to see how the americans do before we pick a champ
There were no expectations in 2011 and they won. There were expectations in 2012 and they lost. Let’s see what they’ve learned thus far. Hopefully, they can shut out the media and focus on their own swims. If they can do that, they will be a formidable cast.
Yeah… the aussie guys put so much pressure on themselves by talking too much.
I hope the’ve learnt their lessons.
It is interesting to note that according to Magnussen’s own admission in today’s Australian’s article by Nicole Jefferey, he has not recovered his confidence.
Unless two americans swim 47mid or lower, I think they (USA, AUS, RUS, FRA) all have equal chance at gold, with FRA slightly less.
Dear aswimfan, among the 4 countries you have mentioned on the men’s side, my order is more FOR THE MOMENT France-Australia on the same line ahead of Russia and USA just behind.
I know France will be much faster than trials.. but without the Choke from last year.. Why would they be ahead of AUS?
For the French times, you have to consider some illness, but If from the top 4 only Agnel can be counted.. The French would be actually even slower than BRA with Cielo.. so.. I think the French REAL time must be actually much more than they showed on Trials..
Cate was easing up over the last 10 mtrs not realising how fast she was going. If all goes well there is a 52.6 in there.
Schlanger had rib injury a month ago flipping truck tire – Lochte style. No wonder she’s uncharacteristically slow.
Magnussen is a beast flat out … Just needs to keep his mouth shut and let his swimming do the talking so it doesn’t come back to bite him.
Magnussen went out in 22.80, came back in 24.73. He was holding back in the first 50, a clear distinction from his 47.1 swim from last year.
Roberts, the 47.6 swimmer, was third in 48.37. Mcevoy is one to watch! Can’t wait to see what he does this summer and in the future!
Magnussen’s time is exactly in accordance with what his coach said last week – Magnussen wouldn’t be fully rested, and would post a time in the mid 47s. They are tapering him for Barcelona – no point in going 47.1 at the national trials only to go slower when racing for the big prize. Let’s hope they get it right this time.

Woulb robert 48.3 might actually be more of a realisitic time for him?
The aussies women look to be favorite for Barcelona on that 400 free relay ; they have very fast swimmers there to beat the netherlands and the Usa ….unless the Us trials show that Megan Romano , Lia neal , Missy Franklin and Allison Schmitt have times around 53/54 . Magnussen is back on his best times from 2012 …..very interesting !
And Magnuessen on 47.53, the same time which he swam to win the Olympic title. Cameron Mcevoy (what a talent) second in 48.07 – the Aussies are looking very dangerous again.
Headlines would be about 100x better had he gone 0.02 faster, but it doesn’t really matter
