Canadian Swimmers Given Medal Incentive For World Championships

The Canadian Chicken Farmers of Canada will be offering an incentive to Canadian swimmers competing at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

The CFC will donate a total of $2000 for any swimmer that medals at worlds. Half the money will go to the swimmer’s local food bank with the other half going to their swim club.

This will be the first year that the CFC will be giving the incentive. In previous years, the highest amount of money donated would have equalled $8000.

At the 2009 World Championships in Rome, the Canadians put forth three total medals. Ryan Cochrane earned two and former world record holder Annamay Pierse took home a silver in the 200m breaststroke.

In 2011, Cochrane once again claimed two medals. Canadian sprinter Brent Hayden took home the silver in the 100m freestyle, and Martha McCabe pushed herself onto the international scene with a bronze in the 200m breaststroke.

Heading into 2013, Cochrane once again took home two medals. Hilary Caldwell managed to step up onto the podium in the 200m backstroke and claim the third medal for Canada.

Now with 2015 on the horizon, Cochrane is once again poised to take home two or three medals. With some more athletes such as Hilary Caldwell, Dominique Bouchard, Kierra Smith, and Santo Condorelli just to name a few, the Canadians have the potential for a lot more medals this time around.

Canada will be sending a 28-swimmer roster to the World Championships with the majority of the team having competed successfully at the Pan American Games. There, the Canadians earned 27 medals. If some of the Pan Am medallists can also make it onto the podium at worlds, there’s great potential for plenty of donations by the CFC.

The swimming portion of the World Championships will run from August 2-9.

This is great and all. But lol, swimming is the only sport where a $2000 “donation” is considered article worthy
