Californian Backstroker Abby Chopp Commits to Kenyon

The Kenyon Ladies have secured a commitment from Conejo Simi Swim Club’s Abby Chopp. Chopp is a senior at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks, California. She has been named to the Scholastic All American Team for 2013-14. Criteria for being named  include:

  • Maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher (Chopp has a 4.0)
    • Honors, AP and International Baccalaureate earn an additional point
    • Grades are only calculated in academic subjects
  • Applicants must have posted a time equaling a Junior Nationals Bonus cut during the SAA qualifying period (June 1, 2013 to August 15, 2014)
  • Athletes must have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade

Chopp’s strongest events are backstroke, and with four top-notch backstroke seniors slated to graduate at the end of this year, the Ladies could use some support in those events.

Chopp’s Top Times:

  • 100 backstroke: 57.82
  • 200 backstroke: 205.79
  • 50 backstroke: 27.61

Chopp’s long course bests in those events are 1:06.18, 2:24.39 and 31.90, respectively.

The Kenyon Ladies have a tremendous history which Chopp will be joining. Since winning their first NCAA Championship title in 1983, the Ladies have secured 23 first place finishes at the DIII National level. For the past two years they have been the runners up at the NCAA DIII Championships. Starting in 1982 no squad at the National level has come in lower than fourth.
