Brazil Cleans Up At South American Junior Championships

Brazil opened the 2015 South American Junior Championships in dominant form, winning 14 of 20 finals on day 1 and 15 of 18 finals on the second day of competition. They appear to be untouchable at this point.

One of the most impressive swims of the meet at this point came from Felipe Ribeiro de Souza. He is the training partner of Junior World Record holder, Matheus Santana. Ribeiro de Souza, 17, came within .03 seconds of breaking Santana’s 17 year-old age record of 49.13 from 2013. Although he didn’t beat Santana’s time, he did establish a new Championship record at 49.16.

On the first day of the competition, there was only one event without a Brazilian in the final. Giordano Gonzalez of Peru won the men’s 50 breaststroke with a time of 31.27, touching out Kevin Wurg of Argentina by .01 seconds.

Fernanda Goeij also broke a championship record in the 200 backstroke with her time of 2:19.69. She won the event by nearly four seconds.

On the second day, four other championship records fell in addition to Felipe Ribeiro de Souza’s 100 freestyle. Delfina Pignatiello of Argentina started the session off, winning the women’s 800 in a record time of 8: 52.32. Brazil’s John Victor Pena later broke the championship record in the men’s 200 backstroke with his time of 2:09.02.

The next record may be slightly lost in the translation, but the results that we received show that Brandonn Almeida of Brazil won the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.19. He was 4:15.82 last week at the Maria Lenk Trophy, and though he slowed down, the result is still a championship record.

The final record was broken by Brazil in the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay with their time of 3:51.89.
