After Four Hours, Lockdown at IUPUI Lifted

Update: An all-clear has been issued around 5PM Eastern Time for the IUPUI campus, and athletes were allowed to leave the pool and return to it to continue training.

Update: According to Wane.com, at 3:20 Eastern, police said that they would meet at 4:20 Eastern to decide whether or not to continue campus lockdown. Those at the pool have reported that they feel safe and very secure in the pool, and don’t feel as though they’re in any danger at the present time.

Swimmers who have arrived in Indianapolis for the 2013 NCAA Championships are reporting that the IUPUI campus, who is hosting the meet, is on lockdown after police spotted a man on campus in a brown trenchcoat carrying a gun.

Those who were already on campus have been instructed to shelter in place, which means that they are to lock all doors and remain in whatever buildings they are currently in. Those who are not on campus have been told to stay clear until the situation is remedied.

“IUPUI Alert! Man with long gun seen in lot at Barnhill and Vermont. Seek shelter,” stakeholders were notified via text message at 1 PM Eastern time.

Swimmers who are at the pool have been locked-down in the natatorium’s locker rooms, while other officials are in various offices around the facility.

During the SEC Championships at Texas A&M a few weeks ago, a portion of campus was locked down during a bomb threat, though the natatorium was unaffected by that alert.

Local news reports are saying that there’s no report of actual shots being fired, but armed police officers have entered the campuses nursing school – which has been evacuated. Further updates on the story can be found on IUPUI’s Twitter feed, @IUPUI_Prepared.

The campus located just west of downtown Indianapolis and is home to roughly 30,000 students.
