Adam Peaty’s Coach Melanie Marshall Wins “Pride of Britain” Award

Melanie Marshall, who as an athlete holds the record for the most medals (6) won by an Englishwoman at a single Commonwealth Games, is amassing an impressive early coaching resume, despite having retired from competition as recently as after the 2008 Olympic Games.

Her latest honor is the Pride of Britain Coach of the Year Award at the Britain Sports Awards in London.

“I was totally shocked, humbled and honoured to win the award,” said Marshall. “The room was full of amazing human beings who have contributed so much more to sport than me. Just to hear the stories of these amazing people and share the room with them was an incredible award in itself. I am so inspired to be considered as someone who deserves this recognition and I would like to thank my mum for all she has done to help me be where I am today.

“I am looking forward to the season ahead its challenges and opportunities. I have a great team of support at City of Derby – coaches, committee members, parents, swimmers and volunteers. These who are incredibly supportive and patient of my time away to focus on a small group of brilliant athletes who are desperate to represent their country and try and make them proud. Thanks to all that support me I will never stop being thankful to team of people around me that make the amazing things possible.”

Marshall, the head coach of the City of Derby team, has led Adam Peaty to World, European, and Commonwealth Games Championships in the last two years, as well as World Records in the 50 and 100 meter breaststrokes in long course meters. Peaty has been the spearhead that has led British Swimming out of the doldrums after a national depression over their performance during the home Olympic Games in 2012.

Peaty is scheduled to race both at the upcoming European Short Course Championships in Israel, as well as for the European continental team at the Duel in the Pool in Indianapolis, United States.

Earlier this year, Marshall was named the British Swimming Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year as well.
