Abbey Weitzeil Swims 47.53 in Prelims of 100 Free, Breaks Another National Record

Abbey Weitzeil has broken her second National High School Record of the day during prelims of the 2015 CIF – Southern Section Championships in California.

After swimming a 21.83 in the 50 free to break her own record, she again lowered her own time in the 100 yard free with a 47.53.

That breaks the 47.82 that she did at this same meet last year that broke both the overall and public high school records, though still falls well short of the 46.29 that she did at non-high school competition in December (a time that was then an American Record).

Comparative splits:

  • Weitzeil Old HS Record:22.95/24.96 = 47.91
  • Weitzeil New HS Record: 23.09/24.44 = 47.53
  • Weitzeil Personal Best: 22.29/24.00 = 46.29

Anne Lepesant, SwimSwam’s reporter at the meet, observed that despite the records, Weitzeil never cracked an emotion that indicated she had swum her best times for the weekend, despite the records, which leads to expectations of more record-breaking swims in finals.

The independent high school record in the 100 yard free belongs to Missy Franklin, who swam 48.39 in 2010.

A full session recap will come at its conclusion.
